30 years ago as an undergraduate I took neuroscience, and developmental psychology, So many unanswered questions, so much research to do. Fast Forward not only to 2000 ed1 but to 2012 2nd edition, and so much of the story has been filled in. The progress on Attachment Theory, and the knowledge from so many scientist, are foot noted in this excellent book. There are some places where the author extends proposed frameworks but the underlying science makes those proposals cogent.
This book has changed my concept of not only the developing mind, but of a concept of how I think of the mind, brain and experience of relationships.

Tony Attwood has authored the comprehensive guide to Asperger's Syndrome (AS). It is exhaustively detailed and will appeal to those preferring a complete treatment. Attwood is a leading expert on autism spectrum disorders and well qualified to introduce this topic and explore it in depth.

The first two chapters introduce Hans Asperger's early observations of children with "mild autistic personality disorder" and their unique pattern of social, emotional, and linguistic differences. He identifies AS on a continuum of natural abilities between autism and normal ("neurotypical"). The relative advantages of seeking a confirmed AS diagnosis are explored along with possible misdiagnoses such as ADHD or a mood disorder. Newly diagnosed "Aspies" may slip into one of four common compensation strategies: reactive depression, escape into imagination, denial and arrogance, or imitation of a "normal" model. Readers are acquainted with formal diagnostic criteria for AS and several scales and questionnaires useful for diagnosis.

Chapters Three through Eleven discuss the distinguishing features of AS in depth. Each chapter covers research findings, individual differences, coping strategies, and AS strengths as well as challenges. AS individuals have different experiences with social understanding and friendship, teasing and bullying, "theory of mind" in understanding others, understanding and expressing emotion, hobbies or "special interests," language, cognitive ability, movement and coordination, and sensory sensitivity. The treatment of each feature is coherent and comprehensive. The summaries which follow each chapter are excellent outlines of key ideas and conclusions.

Anatomy of the Soul

Anatomy of the Soul: Surprising Connections between Neuroscience and Spiritual Practices That Can Transform Your Life and Relationships Hardcover

Author: Curt Thompson - ISBN: 1414334141 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

From Publishers Weekly

Thompson, a Christian psychiatrist, looks at the mind-body connection and explains how understanding human stories can improve peopleÖs relationships with each other, God, and the world. Using the Bible and changing oneÖs thought patterns creates a happier and more devoted person. £God can work through your mind to transform you,¥ the author writes. Thompson uses case studies to assist readers in writing their own stories in order to take their place in the world with God. Readers can then explore their memories, the £rupture¥ of human sin, and healing through the New Testament, in an attempt to find deeper meaning in life. This is a journey for those who want to change the way they think about God. The author encourages engaging in spiritual disciplines (meditation, prayer, fasting, and study) and forming small groups in the local church that employ confession as a means of renewal. This is a tremendous book for the committed Christian seeker.

From the Inside Flap

Our minds and our hearts are connected. We cannot separate what we do with our brains and our relationships from what we do with God. But how exactly does the process work? And is it possible to improve the way we think and relate, resulting in deeper, closer connections with God and the people we love?
In Anatomy of the Soul, psychiatrist Curt Thompson shows how neuro-scientific findings about our brain functions align with what the Bible teaches about how to develop the mind of Christ. As we engage in spiritual practices such as prayer and confession, our actual neural networks are renewed. In essence, God is using our brains as a signpost, supporting and sharpening our understanding of him—and enabling us to reflect his character in the way we live our lives and influence our communities.
This profound book will help you gain a better understanding of how God wired your brain and how spiritual practices can help you, not only improve your relationships with God and other people, but also deal with issues such as anxiety, addiction, unhealthy guilt, or depression.

First, I must make it clear that I have interacted with this book in ways which the average reader probably never will. For starters, I myself am in the process (though currently paused) of earning a degree in a psychology field. This was, in fact, one of the reasons I selected this book. However, my academic appreciation for Anatomy of the Soul did not keep me from appreciating it on other levels. I'll attempt to briefly discuss a few of them below.

Literary, Dr. Curt Thompson is a master storyteller. I'm willing to admit that my own interest in counseling/psychology probably has a lot to do with my fascination of his stories, but he illustrates his points in a fascinating way through real-life examples. On the other hand, his metaphors can be over-exaggerated at times, and he has accepted too many of the modern chic elements of writing, but the book is definitely engaging and well-written. The structure of the book does oscillate between the scientific, theological, and practical, but Thompson does an excellent job of keeping each type of section compelling.

One fairly major quibble with the book format is the way in which his Integration Exercises have been randomly inserted throughout the book. These are several hands-on exercises, described in a page or two, which readers may use to help integrate Thompson's points into their lives. The idea of including these exercises was brilliant, but they occur in random places, many times breaking up sentences or paragraphs. The first few confused me greatly since the only differentiation between them and the surrounding text is a slight change of font. The biggest problem with this approach, besides being confusing, is that the readers will probably skip them to finish the rest of Thompson's thought and forget to come back.

Yes!: 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive Paperback

Author: Noah J. Goldstein Ph.D. - ISBN: 1416576142 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

From Publishers Weekly

Goldstein, Martin and Cialdini meld social psychology, pop culture and field research to demonstrate how the subtle addition, subtraction or substitution of a word, phrase, symbol or gesture can significantly influence consumer behavior. Interspersing references to Britney Spears, the Smurfs and Sex and the City with more academic concepts such as loss aversion and the scarcity principle, the authors illustrate the simple and surprising approaches that can hone a company's marketing strategies. Witty chapters detail the allure of the yellow Post-it, the tip-garnering capabilities of an after-dinner mint, how highlighting a product's weaknesses can increase its appeal, the powerful role of third-party testimonials, how doctors can convince patients to adopt healthier choices by prominently displaying academic credentials in their offices, and how mirroring another person's gestures can elicit a more generous response by strengthening a perceived bond. While written primarily for a marketing audience, this amusing book has equal value and appeal for executives, salespeople—even parents trying to persuade their kids to do homework. (June)

Civilization and Its Discontents

Civilization and Its Discontents (Complete Psychological Works of Sigmund Freud) [Paperback]

Author: Sigmund Freud - ISBN: 0393304515 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Freud’s seminal volume of twentieth-century cultural thought grounded in psychoanalytic theory, now with a new introduction by Christopher Hitchens.

Written in the decade before Freud’s death, Civilization and Its Discontents may be his most famous and most brilliant work. It has been praised, dissected, lambasted, interpreted, and reinterpreted. Originally published in 1930, it seeks to answer several questions fundamental to human society and its organization: What influences led to the creation of civilization? Why and how did it come to be? What determines civilization’s trajectory? Freud’s theories on the effect of the knowledge of death on human existence and the birth of art are central to his work. Of the various English translations of Freud’s major works to appear in his lifetime, only Norton’s Standard Edition, under the general editorship of James Strachey, was authorized by Freud himself. This new edition includes both an introduction by the renowned cultural critic and writer Christopher Hitchens as well as Peter Gay’s classic biographical note on Freud.

Many people today believe that Sigmund Freud was obsessed with sex. However, most of these assumptions are based upon what another person said of Freud and almost never upon a careful reading of Freud's work. These people do not see the fact that Freud writes on more than sexuality, he also analyzes and researches the study of mankind. Sigmund Freud attacks the question why we do things the way we do head on and answers to the best of his reason. Therefore, Sigmund Freud was truly a man of his time and his debate on mankind was a very innovative method to answer mankind's most serious issues.
Man is an aggressive being and civilization is the means which humanity withholds its primal urges in check. At least Freud believes so and shows support for this thesis by referring to mankind's constant need to restrain its inherent passions despite all of the controls placed by society. I believe that Freud was definitely on to something with this point. He is right when he states that man is essentially an anti-social, anti-cultural being. One could look down through the pages of history and see war after war, violent act after violent primarily as a result of the inherent greed for power and a passionate thirst for more than one's own. This is one of the many reasons why communism is impossible, man is a selfish being and always desires more than he possesses. He will do what is necessary to increase his holding at the expense of his fellows. I believe that Nietzsche and Freud are in agreement at this point. However, Nietzsche believes that the masses attempt to quell this passion and label that as noble. I believe that Freud does not think it is possible to restrain this aggressiveness and mankind is only able to cover it up in a semblance of control which we label civilization.
