Yes!

Yes!: 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive [Unabridged] [Audible Audio Edition]

Author: - ISBN: B001THVZNO - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Small changes can make a big difference in your powers of persuasion.

Every day we face the challenge of persuading others to do what we want. But what makes people say yes to our requests? Persuasion is not only an art, it is also a science, and researchers who study it have uncovered a series of hidden rules for moving people in your direction.

Based on more than 60 years of research into the psychology of persuasion, Yes! reveals 50 simple but remarkably effective strategies that will make you much more persuasive at work and in your personal life, too.

Cowritten by the world's most quoted expert on influence, Professor Robert Cialdini, Yes! presents dozens of surprising discoveries from the science of persuasion in short, enjoyable, and insightful chapters that you can apply immediately to become a more effective persuader.

Why did a sign pointing out the problem of vandalism in the Petrified Forest National Park actually increase the theft of pieces of petrified wood? Why did sales of jam multiply tenfold when consumers were offered many fewer flavors? Why did people prefer a Mercedes immediately after giving reasons why they prefer a BMW? What simple message on cards left in hotel rooms greatly increased the number of people who behaved in environmentally friendly ways?

Often counterintuitive, the findings presented in Yes! will steer you away from common pitfalls while empowering you with little known but proven wisdom.

Whether you are in advertising, marketing, management, on sales, or just curious about how to be more influential in everyday life, Yes! shows how making small, scientifically proven changes to your approach can have a dramatic effect on your persuasive powers.

If you haven't read "Influence" by Robert Cialdini then I would strongly recommend skipping this one for now and starting with that one. Cialdini's original book was one of the best psychology books I have ever read. This one is more like a sequel and like most sequels, it is not as good. In Cialdini's "Influence", he talks about 6 weapons of influence:

1) Reciprocity
2) Liking
3) Social Proof
4) Authority
5) Scarcity
6) Commitment and Consistency

This book consists of 50 short chapters where these weapons are at work. Very entertaining and insightful, but I felt that the authors violated some of their own advice by having so many chapters and not organizing them in any particular way. For example, the chapters each demonstrated one of the weapons of influence at work and perhaps the book should have been organized more formally into 6 parts with each part representing one of the weapons. I was very entertained but I am not sure if the book will have any long lasting educational value unlike "Influence".

This is a quick read and I highly recommend it AFTER you have read Cialdini's "Influence".

The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome

The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome Hardcover

Author: Visit Amazon's Tony Attwood Page - ISBN: 1843104954 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Review

'I usually say to the child, 'Congratulations, you have Asperger's syndrome', and explain that this means he or she is not mad, bad or defective, but has a different way of thinking.' --- from The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome

From the Publisher

"The Complete Guide to Asperger's Syndrome is flawless in its ability to ease the trepidations, answer the questions, buoy the spirits, and encourage the dreams of those who walk with AS. Attwood and his insights are golden!"
--Liane Holliday Willey, EdD, author of Pretending to be Normal: Living With Asperger's Syndrome

"An encyclopedia on Asperger's syndrome written in easy-to-read non-technical language. It will be especially useful for helping individuals with Asperger's, parents and professionals understand the social difficulties. There is a good mix of research information, first person reports and clinical information. The section on sensory over-sensitivity is excellent. Sensory issues prevent many people on the autism/Asperger's spectrum from participating in many social activities because stimuli that do not bother most people are intolerable."
--Temple Grandin, author of Thinking in Pictures and Animals in Translation

"Grounded in research from close to 30 years of direct experience, yet very accessible, Dr Attwood brings understanding of Asperger Syndrome to new heights. Peppered with personal accounts and clear explanations...this book is a "must have" for everyone, including those with Asperger Syndrome."

Tony Attwood has authored the comprehensive guide to Asperger's Syndrome (AS). It is exhaustively detailed and will appeal to those preferring a complete treatment. Attwood is a leading expert on autism spectrum disorders and well qualified to introduce this topic and explore it in depth.

The first two chapters introduce Hans Asperger's early observations of children with "mild autistic personality disorder" and their unique pattern of social, emotional, and linguistic differences. He identifies AS on a continuum of natural abilities between autism and normal ("neurotypical"). The relative advantages of seeking a confirmed AS diagnosis are explored along with possible misdiagnoses such as ADHD or a mood disorder. Newly diagnosed "Aspies" may slip into one of four common compensation strategies: reactive depression, escape into imagination, denial and arrogance, or imitation of a "normal" model. Readers are acquainted with formal diagnostic criteria for AS and several scales and questionnaires useful for diagnosis.

Chapters Three through Eleven discuss the distinguishing features of AS in depth. Each chapter covers research findings, individual differences, coping strategies, and AS strengths as well as challenges. AS individuals have different experiences with social understanding and friendship, teasing and bullying, "theory of mind" in understanding others, understanding and expressing emotion, hobbies or "special interests," language, cognitive ability, movement and coordination, and sensory sensitivity. The treatment of each feature is coherent and comprehensive. The summaries which follow each chapter are excellent outlines of key ideas and conclusions.

Many people today believe that Sigmund Freud was obsessed with sex. However, most of these assumptions are based upon what another person said of Freud and almost never upon a careful reading of Freud's work. These people do not see the fact that Freud writes on more than sexuality, he also analyzes and researches the study of mankind. Sigmund Freud attacks the question why we do things the way we do head on and answers to the best of his reason. Therefore, Sigmund Freud was truly a man of his time and his debate on mankind was a very innovative method to answer mankind's most serious issues.
Man is an aggressive being and civilization is the means which humanity withholds its primal urges in check. At least Freud believes so and shows support for this thesis by referring to mankind's constant need to restrain its inherent passions despite all of the controls placed by society. I believe that Freud was definitely on to something with this point. He is right when he states that man is essentially an anti-social, anti-cultural being. One could look down through the pages of history and see war after war, violent act after violent primarily as a result of the inherent greed for power and a passionate thirst for more than one's own. This is one of the many reasons why communism is impossible, man is a selfish being and always desires more than he possesses. He will do what is necessary to increase his holding at the expense of his fellows. I believe that Nietzsche and Freud are in agreement at this point. However, Nietzsche believes that the masses attempt to quell this passion and label that as noble. I believe that Freud does not think it is possible to restrain this aggressiveness and mankind is only able to cover it up in a semblance of control which we label civilization.

No doubt when you first enter graduate school you are excited, but the excitement soon wears off when you find yourself overwhelmed by the amount of work your dissertation or thesis has in store for you. Your approach and methodology to your topic is laid out for you in a simple "start to finish" way in this book. The text is quite readable and isn't overburdened with polysyllabic words requiring a dictionary. The second edition is up to date and takes into consideration that we are no longer writing our dissertations and theses solely from dusty library stacks. For example information is given as to how to evaluate Internet information and effective ways to Google.

CHAPTERS:

Chapter 1. What Are Theses and Dissertations and Why Write a Book About Them?

Chapter 2. Starting Out: Assessing Your Preparation for the Task Ahead

Chapter 3. Time and Trouble Management

Chapter 6. Reviewing the Literature

This is Montessori's last book, and the most in-depth discussion of her theory based on decades of scientific observation of children. It discusses the special mind of the child, and how nurturing the special potentialities that only children have is the only way to change (and save) humanity. Montessori's theories are particularly interesting today in light of recent neurological discoveries, especially those related to critical periods and language.
This is a very dense book, and requires a good deal of concentration and time to read. I would recommmend The Child in the Family as the first book for one wanting an overview of Montessori ideas.
