Electroconvulsive Therapy in Children and Adolescents

Electroconvulsive Therapy in children and Adolescents Hardcover

Author: Neera Ghaziuddin - ISBN: 0199937893 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Review

"The lay public perception of ECT has been shrouded by stigma as much as secrecy (the opacity of the acronym is itself telling). Nowhere are these concerns as pointed as when considering the treatment for children and adolescents. In their timely and groundbreaking volume, Drs. Ghaziuddin and Walter provide more than a peek into the black box of ECT: they have produced a scholarly, thoughtful, patient-centered and age-specific synthesis of an intervention that can be as effective - indeed life-saving - as it continues to be unfairly maligned or tragically overlooked to this day."
-- Andrés Martin, MD, MPH, Yale Child Study Center, Editor-in-Chief, Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry

"ECT can be truly lifesaving in specifically indicated treatment resistant illnesses. This book edited by Drs. Ghaziuddin and Walter will serve as touch stone in offering the most authoritative and trust worthy information in making decisions and conducting ECT. As it is practical, evidence based and thorough, it will serve in educating psychiatrists- in- training as well as all the clinicians who are invested in full recovery for certain serious illnesses in youth."
-- Mani Pavuluri, MD, PhD, Berger-Colbeth Chair in Child Psychiatry, University of Illinois at Chicago

"I welcomed the opportunity to receive Ghaziuddin and Walter's book on ECT for several reasons. First, it provides a concise, eminently readable review of ECT in a single volume, and then illustrates its potential applications in pediatric psychiatry, integrating discussions of safety, putative mechanisms, and existing evidence of effectiveness. But equally important, it reminds us that serious illness in young people requires not simply a broad perspective, but also a cautionary measure against rejecting outright interventions that are safe, and which can bring rapid symptom relief."
-- Michael Strober, PhD, Resnick Professor of Psychiatry, David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA

"This book provides the thoughtful and critical reader with a comprehensive and best evidence based synthesis on the topic of ECT in young people. Mental health clinicians working with youth and their families need to know about ECT and its proper place in mental health care. Young people and their families have a right to receive the best mental health care possible and health providers have a moral and professional obligation to provide the best care possible. Knowledge and understanding are the first steps towards providing best care and to eradication of stigma associated with mental health care. This book provides both the knowledge and understanding needed on this very important topic. Now, not knowing about ECT in the treatment of child and youth mental disorders can no longer be used as an excuse."
-- Dr. Stan Kutcher, Professor of Psychiatry, Dalhousie University

"Drs. Ghaziuddin's and Walter's text is a welcome addition and provides the most comprehensive exploration of ECT in children and adolescents." --AACAP News

"Neera Ghaziuddin and Garry Walter have edited the first-ever book devoted exclusively to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) in children and adolescents. They have done the field (not to mention the patients) a huge service, for the book is excellent and much needed. ... Electroconvulsive Therapy in Children and Adolescents is a milestone publication that should be required reading for ECT practitioners and child and adolescent psychiatrists alike. Drs. Ghaziuddin and Walter are to be congratulated for their successful and courageous effort." --The Journal of ECT

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy

Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy: A Practitioner's Guide [Hardcover]

Author: Nancy McWilliams - ISBN: 1593850093 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION
Building on the enormous popularity of her two previous texts on diagnosis and case formulation, this important work from Nancy McWilliams completes the trilogy by addressing in detail the art and science of psychodynamic treatment. McWilliams distills the essential principles of clinical practice, including effective listening and talking; transference and countertransference; emotional safety; and an empathic, attuned attitude toward the patient. The author describes the values, assumptions, and clinical and research findings that guide the psychoanalytic enterprise, and shows how to integrate elements of other theoretical perspectives when necessary. She also discusses the phases of treatment and covers such neglected topics as educating the client about the therapeutic process, handling complex challenges to boundaries, and attending to self-care. Presenting complex clinical information in personal, nontechnical language enriched by in-depth clinical vignettes, this is an essential psychoanalytic work and training text for therapists.

Statistics in Plain English, Third Edition [Kindle Edition]

Author: Timothy C. Urdan - ISBN: B004RM9VSY - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

This inexpensive paperback provides a brief, simple overview of statistics to help readers gain a better understanding of how statistics work and how to interpret them correctly. Each chapter describes a different statistical technique, ranging from basic concepts like central tendency and describing distributions to more advanced concepts such as t tests, regression, repeated measures ANOVA, and factor analysis. Each chapter begins with a short description of the statistic and when it should be used. This is followed by a more in-depth explanation of how the statistic works. Finally, each chapter ends with an example of the statistic in use, and a sample of how the results of analyses using the statistic might be written up for publication. A glossary of statistical terms and symbols is also included.

New features in the third edition include:

  • a new chapter on Factor and Reliability Analysis especially helpful to those who do and/or read survey research,
  • new "Writing it Up" sections demonstrate how to write about and interpret statistics seen in books and journals,
  • new section on understanding the distribution of data (ch. 1) to help readers understand how to use and interpret graphs,
  • many more examples, tables, and charts to help students visualize key concepts.

Statistics in Plain English, Third Edition is an ideal supplement for statistics, research methods, and/or for courses that use statistics taught at the undergraduate or graduate level, or as a reference tool for anyone interested in refreshing their memory about key statistical concepts. The research examples are from psychology, education, and other social and behavioral sciences.

A very helpful primer/intro to statistics. Generally well-written and intuitively presented. It succeeds where most introductory texts fail: the author has a genuine understanding of how and in what way statistics are simply not intuitive to the average individual. He keeps the math and greek symbols to a minimum, focusing on simple illustrative examples that help build intuition.

So why the average review? I'd really like to give this book a higher grade. The problem is there are too many errors and inconsistencies that make reading it a frustrating experience. It strikes me as a book that was written by someone who is knowledgeable and passionate about the subject and was able to devote a huge amount of time towards the project. But then, having gotten 97% of the way there, the editing and proofing process was not given the same attention to detail.

I read the Kindle version of the 3rd edition which doesn't include page numbers, so unfortunately my examples below refer to locations. (Incidentally, as with many Kindle editions, there is a very large number of additional formatting issues and typos that further distracted from the reading experience. My opinion is that responsibility for this type of problem is shared between the publisher, the author, and Amazon. Examples below are of problems that I assume exist in both the Kindle and traditional versions.)

Chapter 4, location ~1131:
"A full 50% of the distribution falls between the mean and 1 standard deviation above the mean in this group of scores (see Figure 4.4)"
-> Figure 4.4 doesn't show this

Chapter 5, location ~1233:
"If I told you that I had a z score of 1.0 on my last spelling test, what would you think of my performance? What you would know for sure is that...

-> Figure 4.4 doesn't show this

Chapter 5, location ~1233:
"If I told you that I had a z score of 1.0 on my last spelling test, what would you think of my performance? What you would know for sure is that...
