Attachment-Focused EMDR

Attachment-Focused EMDR: Healing Relational Trauma [Kindle Edition]

Author: Laurel Parnell - ISBN: B00AEC9QMC - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Integrating the latest in attachment theory and research into the use of EMDR.

Much has been written about trauma and neglect and the damage they do to the developing brain. But little has been written or researched about the potential to heal these attachment wounds and address the damage sustained from neglect or poor parenting in early childhood. This book presents a therapy that focuses on precisely these areas. Laurel Parnell, leader and innovator in the field of eye-movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), offers us a way to embrace two often separate worlds of knowing: the science of early attachment relationships and the practice of healing within an EMDR framework. This beautifully written and clinically practical book combines attachment theory, one of the most dynamic theoretical areas in psychotherapy today, with EMDR to teach therapists a new way of healing clients with relational trauma and attachment deficits.

Readers will find science-based ideas about how our early relationships shape the way the mind and brain develop from our young years into our adult lives. Our connections with caregivers induce neural circuit firings that persist throughout our lives, shaping how we think, feel, remember, and behave. When we are lucky enough to have secure attachment experiences in which we feel seen, safe, soothed, and secure—the “four S’s of attachment” that serve as the foundation for a healthy mind—these relational experiences stimulate the neuronal activation and growth of the integrative fibers of the brain.

EMDR is a powerful tool for catalyzing integration in an individual across several domains, including memory, narrative, state, and vertical and bilateral integration. In Laurel Parnell’s attachment-based modifications of the EMDR approach, the structural foundations of this integrative framework are adapted to further catalyze integration for individuals who have experienced non-secure attachment and developmental trauma.

The book is divided into four parts. Part I lays the groundwork and outlines the five basic principles that guide and define the work. Part II provides information about attachment-repair resources available to clinicians. This section can be used by therapists who are not trained in EMDR. Part III teaches therapists how to use EMDR specifically with an attachment-repair orientation, including client preparation, target development, modifications of the standard EMDR protocol, desensitization, and using interweaves. Case material is used throughout. Part IV includes the presentation of three cases from different EMDR therapists who used attachment-focused EMDR with their clients. These cases illustrate what was discussed in the previous chapters and allow the reader to observe the theoretical concepts put into clinical practice—giving the history and background of the clients, actual EMDR sessions, attachment-repair interventions within these sessions and the rationale for them, and information about the effects of the

interventions and the course of treatment.

Laurel Parnell, Ph.D., clinical psychologist and international EMDR trainer and consultant, just published Attachment Focused EMDR (AF-EMDR) in late 2013. It brings together the culmination of her years of experience, evolved thinking and insights in doing, demonstrating and teaching EMDR and now AF-EMDR. Her book is an invaluable must for EMDR therapists who want to take their work to the next level. It is a clear, well organized, in depth, compassionate exposition of how to do AF-EMDR with clients who suffer early attachment wounds. She draws on Mary Main's, Ph.D. research on secure, ambivalent, avoidant and disorganized attachment styles. Dr. Parnell describes characteristic deficits in the sense of self and relationships of people who may fall into the latter three attachment styles and what they need in terms of AF-EMDR. She presents evidence that AF-EMDR changes the brain through laying down integrative and positive neural pathways. She inspires us with evidence that clients with traumatic childhoods can heal and develop what she calls "earned secure attachment" through the therapist's skillful empathic attunement to them and the neural network processing of AF-EMDR work.

Dr. Parnell explains how to proceed doing AF-EMDR sessions utilizing the Modified EMDR Protocol. Each session begins with positive resource installation before identifying the client's disturbing image, emotions, body sensations and negative cognition. Then it proceeds to the desentization phase--processing (with bilateral stimulation) the activated trauma memory networks until reaching a SUDS of 0 or 1 (with body scanning to check that processing is complete). It follows to installation of the positive cognition that arises spontaneously with the evolved picture, and ends with closure and debriefing.

I am a therapist who was looking for a good workbook w/ tools to help w/ anxiety for my adolescent population. Although this workbook has some good materials it seems to be more appropriate for preteen or younger teens. Which is still helpful for me. For parents looking for a good workbook I would recommend this book for kids 11 through 14 or 15. Older than that I would look into books geared toward adults, as I think older teens would find this book immature.

DESCRIPTION

Those who place themselves in harm’s way are consistently told to focus, concentrate and utilize the warrior mindset. However, rarely are they trained HOW to accomplish this. Well as you may have already guessed from the title of this review that, I consider this book to be the third installment in the outstanding trilogy, which includes; On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society and On Combat, The Psychology and Physiology of Deadly Conflict in War and in Peace which focus on the psychology of killing in combat and/or self-defense, which amounts to pretty much the same thing although usually in much different settings and circumstances. I guess one could also make the argument that killing during wartime is radically different than in self-defense, but that is an argument best left for another time and forum. I highly recommend that you also purchase and study these two previous volumes along with this one.

When I first started reading this book, I was reminded of a scene from the movie, The Shootist, starring John Wayne and Ron Howard. In this particular scene, Howard asks Wayne (who is playing a very proficient gunfighter who is elderly and dying of cancer) how he had fought so many gun battles over the years against such a wide range of opponents and come out the winner in every one of them. Wayne replies by telling Howard that it wasn't a matter of being the fastest with a gun, or even the best shot, the major factor was being "WILLING TO KILL" another human being without forethought or hesitation.

Verbal Behavior

Verbal Behavior [Kindle Edition]

Author: B. F. Skinner - ISBN: B00JFC0B8U - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

“Verbal Behavior” is a 1957 book by psychologist B. F. Skinner that analyzes human behavior, encompassing what is traditionally called language, linguistics, or speech. For Skinner, verbal behavior is subject to the same controlling variables as any other operant behavior, although Skinner differentiates between verbal behavior which is mediated by other people, and that which is mediated by the natural world. The book “Verbal Behavior” is almost entirely theoretical, involving little experimental research in the work itself. It was an outgrowth of a series of lectures first presented at the University of Minnesota in the early 1940s and developed further in his summer lectures at Columbia and William James lectures at Harvard in the decade before the book’s publication. A growing body of research and applications based on “Verbal Behavior” has occurred since its original publication, particularly in the past decade.

I return to this book off and on. (I wish I can study this book with someone who has mastered this material.) The only epiphany I have had in my life is/was when I read Chapter 2 of this book about two decades ago (and understood that Skinner was analyzing language utterances as law of effect conditioned behavior).

Simply a brilliant book. Most underrated,as people have pointed out.

I just reread Chapter 1. It only has 12 pages. However, the brilliance can clearly be seen. As is the difficulty. There are about 12 sentences (in these 12 pages) that I do not understand almost completely. (For instance, the one about speaker also being a listener.)

On a lark, I sent a copy of this to Noam Chomsky, not expecting to receive a reply. I was surprised to get a reply. We exchanged several e-mails. However, Chomsky stubbornly refused to see my points. I am rereading this book and the following thought occurred to me: In this book, Skinner proposes a whole new scheme for understanding language behavior, which effectively pushes aside centuries of traditional views. (If he is right, this is a major step forward. And I have no doubt that he is right.) Has this ever been done before?

On a lark, I sent a copy of this to Noam Chomsky, not expecting to receive a reply. I was surprised to get a reply. We exchanged several e-mails. However, Chomsky stubbornly refused to see my points. His answers were mostly non-sequiturs. Are may points valid? You be the judge when I get around to posting my two specific points. In the meantime, you may want to look at

I am rereading this book and the following thought occurred to me: In this book, Skinner proposes a whole new scheme for understanding language behavior, which effectively pushes aside centuries of traditional views. (If he is right, this is a major step forward. And I have no doubt that he is right.) Has this ever been done before?

Attachment-Focused EMDR

Attachment-Focused EMDR: Healing Relational Trauma [Hardcover]

Author: Laurel Parnell - ISBN: 0393707458 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

This is a much more thorough review (I felt) than the Howard Rosenthal book that was promoted heavily in my school program. The advantage that I feel this has over the Rosenthal text is that it is divided into the 8 sections (like Rosenthal's), but the contents of the chapters is an outline format of the key points (likely) to come up on the NCE or CPCE. There are questions throughout each chapter to ensure that you understand what you just read, and overall I felt it was easier to learn about a theory/technique/person from this text.

At the end there are also 2 practice CPCE tests (which I just took this past weekend...and did NOT think was all that similar to the practice tests, but I still feel those tests were worthwhile) and two NCE tests. The answer sheet for the tests were done in such a way that the test taker could easily see the chapters that the most improvement is needed on--so you can know where to focus your time.

There was also a VERY detailed glossary of people, theories, techniques, etc in the back of the book which I found extremely helpful. (The Rosenthal Human Services Dictionary was a waste of my money as it left out major things.)

If you are looking for a book to buy...I studied with both Rosenthal and this book, but I'd recommend this one over Rosenthal.

My Age of Anxiety

My Age of Anxiety: Fear, Hope, Dread, and the Search for Peace of Mind [Unabridged] [Audible Audio Edition]

Author: - ISBN: B00HFUWAQK - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

A riveting, revelatory, and moving account of the author?s struggles with anxiety, and of the history of efforts by scientists, philosophers, and writers to understand the condition.

As recently as thirty-five years ago, anxiety did not exist as a diagnostic category. Today, it is the most common form of officially classified mental illness. Scott Stossel gracefully guides us across the terrain of an affliction that is pervasive yet too often misunderstood.

Drawing on his own long-standing battle with anxiety, Stossel presents an astonishing history, at once intimate and authoritative, of the efforts to understand the condition from medical, cultural, philosophical, and experiential perspectives. He ranges from the earliest medical reports of Galen and Hippocrates, through later observations by Robert Burton and S?ren Kierkegaard, to the investigations by great nineteenth-century scientists, such as Charles Darwin, William James, and Sigmund Freud, as they began to explore its sources and causes, to the latest research by neuroscientists and geneticists. Stossel reports on famous individuals who struggled with anxiety, as well as on the afflicted generations of his own family.

His portrait of anxiety reveals not only the emotion?s myriad manifestations and the anguish anxiety produces but also the countless psychotherapies, medications, and other (often outlandish) treatments that have been developed to counteract it. Stossel vividly depicts anxiety?s human toll - its crippling impact, its devastating power to paralyze - while at the same time exploring how those who suffer from it find ways to manage and control it.My Age of Anxiety is learned and empathetic, humorous and inspirational, offering the listener great insight into the biological, cultural, and environmental factors that contribute to the affliction.

Who knew that Freud, Darwin, Gandhi and Moses all suffered what could be viewed as anxiety disorders at times? Or that many other great achievers did as well, including Harvard deans and the Atlantic editor who wrote this tome? If you dread public speaking, suffer nervous stomach, obsess over phobias, or hail from a family of worriers, "My Age of Anxiety" might very well make you feel better. The author has been through all of that plus a hundred times more, including losing bowel control at the Kennedy Compound one weekend when he was conducting interviews and getting raw sewage all over their guest bathroom, its rug, and himself. He grew up with a morbid fear of vomiting and, lucky for us readers, exceptional powers of self expression and research. The book chronicles his own life struggles and study of anxiety and is both highly readable and tremendously informative, just like an award-winning Atlantic article on the subject would be.

No matter how much you've read about anxiety, this is likely to offer something more either in the very moving and often stunning personal account or the thoughtful analysis and detail. The book excels in what it covers, mainly the medical model and treatment of anxiety and Mr. Stossel's own hellish experiences. Where it falls somewhat short is in providing enough information on how a man so encumbered by intrusive symptoms and insecurities could manage to excel at Harvard and become a successful editor of a national magazine.

There's also not much on the benefits of exercise, mindfulness meditation, self compassion, or dialectical behavior therapy, and I'd like to see the author delve into these more, as he has other treatments, and report back, both for his own sake and for ours.

Abba's Child: The Cry of the Heart for Intimate Belonging [Unabridged] [Audible Audio Edition]

Author: - ISBN: B001P93GNS - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Is an imposter robbing you of God's love?

Many Christians have bought into the lie that we are worthy of God's love only when our lives are going well. If our families are happy or our jobs are meaningful, life is a success. But when life begins to fall through the cracks and embarrassing sins threaten to reveal our less-than-perfect identity, we scramble to keep up a good front to present to the world - and God. We cower and hide until we can rearrange the mask of perfection and look good again.

Sadly, it is then that we wonder why we lack intimate relationships and a passionate faith. Yes all this time God is calling us to take the mask off and come openly to Him. God longs for us to know in the depth of our being that He loves us and accepts us as we are. When we are true selves, we can finally claim our identity as God's child - Abba's child - and experience His pleasure in who we are.

Brennan Manning encourages readers to let go of the imposter lifestyle and freely accept our belovedness as a child of the heavenly Father. In Him there is life, our passion is rekindled, and our union with Him is His greatest pleasure.

REVIEWS

After years of having evangelical education crammed into my head, Abba's Child is a book which challenges what I say I know and believe. Manning's honesty about the terrible sin problem all born-again sinners are acquainted with rings true to the Apostle Paul's lament "the things I wish to do, I do not (and vice versa)". But, instead of talking us out of our bad feelings about our condition, Manning challenges us to begin the journey of intimacy with the God Paul also teaches us is named Abba. Far from the typical modern Christian books which skim the surface of the human experience, Abba's Child is a primer for those who quietly realize that the Christian faith is much more than a call to a system of belief of Absolute Truths-----and that it is a call to the most important Relationship of our lives, that with our utterly "Other" God. Evangelical friends who presently are teaching, studying and ministering at Yale and Cambridge (UK) have thanked me over and over for giving them this book, both saying they must read it over and over----a life changing book! If you are squeamish in thinking God the Father's name is "Daddy", and that he longs for you to address and know him as such, this book probably will make you uncomfortable. If you have arrived at the exhaustion of modernity in the American evangelical experience, this book will remind you that the Gospel is a relationship, not a "plan of salvation" to know, memorize and regurgitate. Great reading for worn-out evangelicals!

I’ve read many books on the subconscious but Felicia Kliment’s book is the only one that includes everything I’ve ever wanted to know about the subject–– the most important: How I can tell when it sends a plan of action on to me.

Kliment gives scientific backing to explain how the subconscious thinks––so different from our rational minds–-and how it has the power to lift a life going nowhere out of the doldrums. I loved the stories of people whose lives were changed for the better because they learned to listen to the warnings their subconscious sent them.

Like almost everyone else, I have dreams and every so often I experience a meaningful coincidence. I didn’t realize before I read this book that these were messages from my subconscious which I better heed or suffer the consequences!!!

Kliment’s book is clearly written and succinct. It just flows––– like a novel that has the reader sitting on edge, wondering what’s going to happens next–––that’s what made it such a great pleasure to read.
