If you are taking a child development class this is the book you should use. The only down side was someone in the class had the 8th edition and the wording between both books was almost word for word. So unless you get a class that uses the 10th edition just save the money and buy the 8th edition. For the most part the book was great and really put everything out there, I just couldn't get past how much it was a copy of edition 8.

DESCRIPTION

Review

Everything we tried in the past was making the situation worse. Now our intense child is intensely wonderful without medications. --Parent/Therapist

This is absolutely the most worthwhile information I have ever learned. My hyperactive child is now my amazing child. --Parent

After applying these strategies for less than a month, my difficult teenage daughter is incredible --parent/Educator

From the Publisher

The Nurtured Heart Approach is an amazing set of strategies developed specifically for children with ADHD and other challenging behaviors to facilitate parenting and classroom success. These methods have helped thousands of families to transform their child from using their intensity in primarily negative ways to using their intensity in beautifully creative and constructive ways. This approach has also helped teachers and other school personnel to have a dramatically positive effect on all children. Most ordinary methods of parenting and teaching inadvertently backfire when applied to ADHD and other challenging children, despite the best of intentions. Most methods accidentally reward children by giving far more energy to children when things are going wrong. The Nurtured Heart Approach is a powerful and quick way to create a new scenario of success. This approach is fully described in the new book, Transforming the Difficult Child, The Nurtured Heart Approach.

My son was diagnosed ADHD (severe -- and I mean SEVERE), bipolar, and ODD (oppositional defiant disorder) nearly four years ago; shortly after he turned 7. Those first three years were pure hell. Between behaviors, education issues, medication issues, and regular everyday "boy stuff" -- I was losing hope. In my research on these different disorders -- particularly ODD as it was the one I was least familiar with -- I came across rather frightening info -- particularly that ODD that isn't stopped becomes CD (conduct disorder), which basically guarantees a life in prison or as a social
outcast of some other sort for the person in question. That's incredibly frightening for a parent to learn. Not only was my son diagnosed with something that was not very treatable, but if it didn't respond to treatment he was in for a lifetime of hell. I also read that the only thing PROVEN to be effective against persistent ODD is in-home intensive therapy. Well, we did in-home counseling and it didn't do much (more or less parent training, and it wasn't new information at all). I did get wrap-around services for my son, which includes an in-home mental health aid 4 days a week (now it's three, soon to be two). THIS is what worked:
The groundwork I lay as far as behavior management and a positive discipline plan is contained wholly in this book. "The Nurtured Heart Approach" is the *only* approach that I felt good about, was easy to apply, was easy to stick with, and - most importantly - *WORKED*. This behavior plan, which includes a great point system at the end of the book-- was applied religiously and with total disregard for any protestations from my son (and daughter -- she's not got all his diagnoses, but it's a darned good plan and applies to an easy kid, too).

This book offers an excellent overview of many aspects of psych assessment. It was very helpful in reviewing for quals- but watch out! There are several errors in this book! The specificity of a test is incorrectly explained, as is MMPI-2 TRIN interpretation. Some wierd formatting inconsistencies pop up in the Rorschach section... I don't recommend this book for 1st year grad students who are learning this material for the first time because they won't catch the errors and may learn things incorrectly.

Transforming the Difficult Child

Transforming the Difficult Child: The Nurtured Heart Approach Paperback

Author: Visit Amazon's Howard Glasser Page - ISBN: 0967050707 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Review

After applying these strategies for less than a month, my difficult teenage daughter is incredible. --Parent. Everything we tried in the past was making the situation worse. Now our intense child is intensely wonderful without medications. --Parent/Educator. This is absolutely the most worthwhile information I have ever learned. My hyperactive child is now my amazing child. --Parent/Therapist

I have read dozens of books, tried dozens of programs with no change in my child's behavior what so ever. This book has changed our lives! We started implementing the steps and the very first day we saw a change in our child. Life has become pleasant and peaceful without any compromises. Our child is helpful, considerate and no longer talks back. He does his chores before we ask him and his room has stayed clean for three weeks without any nagging!!!! I highly recommend this book to anyone with a difficult child! --Parent/Educator

Like many of my peers, I too want to do the best possible job raising my children. The desire to be respectful and supportive does not always involve consistent discipline, but it should! Anyone with a sensitive, loving child can benefit from this book. Any parent who feels like they have tried every trick in the book to promote good behavior in their children, but can't seem to gain compliance in their kids, will benefit from this book. I was recommended this book by our psychologist, whom we have been seeing because I ran out of coping strategies for dealing with my very sensitive, very smart, and very compliant child who seemed addicted to PUSHING MY BUTTONS!! Turns out, the very emotional responses I had to my child's poor behaviors, was promoting the very things I was trying to;punish away; Time outs escalated into screaming matches and made me feel like a drill Sargent, not very productive, and definitely not respectful or supportive! Transforming the Difficult Child has opened my eyes to; accentuate the positive; and;down play the negative; In short, shifting all of my aggravated tirades into positive reinforcement of GOOD behaviors. Within two weeks of implementing this style of attention, my 5 year old was more relaxed, more cheerful, more agreeable and happier than I had ever seen him. In turn, he was also less anxious, stopped a nervous habit of lip licking that had been with him for two years, and lots of chapped skin! He now knows that he is good MOST of the time, and only bad once in a while. I was failing to acknowledge his good behavior, because that is what we think of as; expected; but He was feeling as if he was always bad, because our energy was always spent on correcting bad behaviors. Please read this book if you recognize any of the above story, or if you know someone who is in constant power struggles with their children. This book has a simple, gentle, loving and supportive plan of action that will change your Family for the better, even if your child isn't difficult. After all, we all want someone to acknowledge our good behaviors, who better to do it than your parent!! --Parent

"Our child was in therapy for years. The more she got in touch with her feelings, the more she seemed to take her anger out on us. It's hard to believe, but after applying these strategies for less than a month, my difficult daughter is now a cooperative and pleasant young person."

Male, Female: The Evolution of Human Sex Differences [Hardcover]

Author: David C. Geary - ISBN: 1433806827 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION
Why do girls tend to earn better grades in school than boys? Why are men still far more likely than women to earn degrees in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics? And why are men on average more likely to be injured in accidents and fights than women? These and many other questions are the subject of both informal investigation in the media and formal investigation in academic and scientific circles. In his landmark book "Male, Female: The Evolution of Human Sex Differences", author David Geary provided the first comprehensive evolutionary model to explain human sex differences. Using the principles of sexual selection such as female choice and male-male competition, the author systematically reviewed and discussed the evolution of sex differences and their expression throughout the animal kingdom, as a means of not just describing but explaining the same process in Homo sapiens. Now, over ten years since the first edition, Geary has completed a massive update, expansion and theoretical revision of his classic text. New findings in brain and genetic research inform a wealth of new material, including a new chapter on sex differences in patterns of life history development; expanded coverage of genetic research (e.g. DNA finger printing to determine paternity as related to male-male competition in primates); fatherhood in humans; cross-cultural patterns of sex differences in choosing and competing for mates; and, genetic, hormonal, and socio-cultural influences on the expression of sex differences. Finally, through his motivation to control framework (introduction in the first edition and expanded in "The Origin of Mind", 2005), Geary presents a theoretical bridge linking parenting, mate choices, and competition, with children's development and sex differences in brain and cognition. The result is an even better book than the original - a lively and nuanced application of Darwin's insight to help explain our heritage and our place in the natural world.

Ever wonder why older men are considered attractive (like Harrison Ford and Sean Connery, but rarely older women?
Is beauty in the eye of the beholder when it comes to physical attraction in dating, or is beauty something we can all agree upon?
Why are males more physically aggresive than females? Why are women more involved with the caretaking of children than men?
Is there evidence that gender differences emerge before socialization can occur such as in infancy?
Dr. Geary attempts to explain gender differences from an evolutionary framework by integrating compelling evidence from many social fields such as anthropology, psychology, and sociobiology. Unlike the watered down "Mars and Venus" books, this book is scholarly and offers scientific evidence to support the claims. A must read for any serious student or scholar of the social sciences.

Free to Learn: Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier, More Self-Reliant, and Better Students for Life [Kindle Edition]

Author: Peter Gray - ISBN: B00B3M3KZG - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION
Our children spend their days being passively instructed, and made to sit still and take tests—often against their will. We call this imprisonment schooling, yet wonder why kids become bored and misbehave. Even outside of school children today seldom play and explore without adult supervision, and are afforded few opportunities to control their own lives. The result: anxious, unfocused children who see schooling—and life—as a series of hoops to struggle through.

In Free to Learn, developmental psychologist Peter Gray argues that our children, if free to pursue their own interests through play, will not only learn all they need to know, but will do so with energy and passion. Children come into this world burning to learn, equipped with the curiosity, playfulness, and sociability to direct their own education. Yet we have squelched such instincts in a school model originally developed to indoctrinate, not to promote intellectual growth.

To foster children who will thrive in today’s constantly changing world, we must entrust them to steer their own learning and development. Drawing on evidence from anthropology, psychology, and history, Gray demonstrates that free play is the primary means by which children learn to control their lives, solve problems, get along with peers, and become emotionally resilient. This capacity to learn through play evolved long ago, in hunter-gatherer bands where children acquired the skills of the culture through their own initiatives. And these instincts still operate remarkably well today, as studies at alternative, democratically administered schools show. When children are in charge of their own education, they learn better—and at lower cost than the traditional model of coercive schooling.

A brave, counterintuitive proposal for freeing our children from the shackles of the curiosity-killing institution we call school, Free to Learn suggests that it’s time to stop asking what’s wrong with our children, and start asking what’s wrong with the system. It shows how we can act—both as parents and as members of society—to improve children’s lives and promote their happiness and learning.

According to Peter Gray. he wrote this book in response to the implications and consequences of a school-centric model for childhood development: "The school system has directly and indirectly, often unintentionally, fostered an attitude in society that children learn and progress primarily by doing tasks that are directed and evaluated by adults, and that children's own [informal, self-directed] activities are wasted time...Related to this anti-play attitude is an ever-increasing focus on children's [begin italics] performance [end italics], which can be measured, and decreasing concern for true learning, which is difficult or even impossible to measure. What matters in today's educational world is performance that can be scored and compared across students, across schools, and even across nations to see who is better [who scores higher] and who is worse [who scores lower]. Knowledge that is not part of the school curriculum, even deep knowledge, doesn't count."

Credit Gray with brilliant use of sequences to explain the development of a key concept or the steps/stages of a key process. For example, seven reasons why children don't like school; lessons to be learned from exemplary schools (e.g. Sudbury Valley School); universal types of children's play; five of the most valuable lessons to be learned from children's informal, self-directed ways of playing games such as baseball that formal, adult-directed games do not; three primary styles of parenting (i.e. trustful, directive domineering, and directive-protective; reasons for the decline in trustful parenting; and how to become a more trustful parent.

DESCRIPTION

Review

Praise for the Fourth Edition

"In sum, this book continues to set the standard in the field and is strongly recommended as a basic reference guide for those clinicians who routinely do psychological testing." (Psychotherapy Review, 11/6/2006)

Review

"In the 5th edition of his very helpful text, Handbook of Psychological Assessment, Groth-Marnat once again assembles information about the history, development, and latest research on the major psychological assessment instruments in current use. He also gives wise and clear advice about the general process of clinical assessment, and about how to integrate information into a useful psychological report. I was particularly fascinated with the sample reports Groth-Marnat assembled from different settings, which give a sense of the breadth of assessment practice today.
This handbook will be extremely useful to students beginning their careers in psychological assessment, and to experienced assessors who want a handy resource when needed."
Dr. Stephen Finn

"This Handbook is absolutely at the top of the “to read” list, or should be, for serious scholars of psychological measurement methods.  Already known for its attention to detail and it’s depth, this edition of the Handbook has been given greater breadth through the addition of several great features:  1) The literature has been critically updated, 2) sections for working with special populations have been added, and 3) its content is tuned to important changes in the field.  In all this, it has retained Groth-Marnat’s great clarity and devotion to being accurate and useful."
Larry E. Beutler, PhD, ABPP; Stanford University School of Medicine

This book explains in clear terms the role exercise plays in our mental processes. Moving our muscles produces proteins that play roles in our highest thought processes. Ratey says, "thinking is the internalization of movement." He illustrates this with the story of the sea squirt that hatches with a rudimentary spinal cord and 300 brain cells. It has only hours to find a spot of coral on which to put down roots or die. When it does put down roots, it eats its brain. According to Ratey only a moving animal needs a brain.

He begins with the value exercise has for the learning process in high school students: improved academic performance, alertness, attention and motivation.

He cites studies that say we can alter our mental states by physically moving. He said depression is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. He then presents a chapter where depression is relieved in case studies by exercise.

Among the areas Ratey covers are: stress, depression, ADD, and aging. This book is a great motivator for exercise.

However, Ratey's work was preceded by Glenn Doman's. Doman advocated exercise for brain injured children in the 1950s when the only 'treatment' was to institutionalize them. He later started a `super babies' program. Both the educational and medical establishments attacked and marginalized Doman's work.

I bought this book for an online AP Psychology course. I have had a great interest in psychology for a long time, and this was perhaps what caused me to enjoy the book so much. I found that I have really enjoyed reading this book overall. Because it was for an online class, this book was the most important, if not the only important resource in the class. It did a brilliant job of teaching psychology without a teacher's support and guidance. It kept me quite inspired and interested. Now I'm going to stop beating around the bush and tell you what I found in this book directly.

The writing style is definitely far more wordy than most science books. This could be both helpful and annoying at times. The style ensured that once I done with a section, the writer had said the same thing in so many ways with so much evidence intertwined, as it ought to be, that I had no doubts at the end, and I didn't feel the missing spot of a teacher. So whether you have a good teacher or not, I promise that this book will get you through the course. But, as I said, sometimes it can be annoying. Myers uses tons of analogies and examples that sometimes make me think, "Where is this guy going? Can't he just state it plainly?" Overall though, it's good.

The structure of the book is amazing, and amazing might be an understatement. It is very well organized. If you buy the module edition, it is even better. Everything is broken up into subsections, and when you're reviewing, the small sections are extremely useful. Myers lists out evidence, and includes many helpful diagrams and charts. Biological processes that are often difficult to understand are simple with his diagrams. At the end of the module there is a small "objectives" summary.

Review

Laurette Lynn, Unplugged Mom.com
“[A] well written, well organized and beautifully stated piece of work….I emphatically recommend this book for any parent as well as any educator or anyone interested in improving education for our society.”

Mothering.com
“[Free to Learn is] a powerful agent of transformation. I'd like to put a copy in the hands of every parent, teacher, and policy maker.”

Publishers Weekly
“[E]nergetic…Gray powerfully argues that schools inhibit learning…. [Gray’s] vivid illustrations of the ‘power of play’ to shape an individual are bound to provoke a renewed conversation about turning the tide in an educational system that fosters conformity and inhibits creative thinking.”

Frank Forencich, author of Exuberant Animal and Change Your Body, Change the World
Free to Learn is a courageous and profoundly important book. Peter Gray joins the likes of Richard Louv and Alfie Kohn in speaking out for a more humane, compassionate and effective approach to education.”

Steven Pinker, Harvard College Professor of Psychology, Harvard University, and author of How the Mind Works
“Peter Gray is one of the world’s experts on the evolution of childhood play, and applies his encyclopedic knowledge of psychology, and his humane voice, to the pressing issue of educational reform. Though I am not sure I agree with all of his recommendations, he forces us all to rethink our convictions on how schools should be designed to accommodate the ways that children learn.”

Lenore Skenazy, author of Free-Range Kids
“All kids love learning. Most don’t love school. That’s a disconnect we’ve avoided discussing—until this lightning bolt of a book. If you’ve ever wondered why your curious kid is turning into a sullen slug at school, Peter Gray’s Free to Learn has the answer. He also has the antidote.”

David Sloan Wilson, SUNY Distinguished Professor of Biology and Anthropology, Binghamton University, and author of Evolution for Everyone
“The modern educational system is like a wish made in a folk tale gone horribly wrong. Peter Gray’s Free to Learn leads us out of the maze of unforeseen consequences to a more natural way of letting children educate themselves. Gray’s message might seem too good to be true, but it rests upon a strong scientific foundation. Free to Learn can have an immediate impact on the children in your life.”

Roberta Michnick Golinkoff, author of Einstein Never Used Flash Cards and A Mandate for Playful Learning in Preschool
“A compelling and most enjoyable read. Gray illustrates how removing play from childhood, in combination with increasing the pressures of modern-day schooling, paradoxically reduces the very skills we want our children to learn. The decline of play is serious business.”

Stuart Brown, M.D., Founder and President, The National Institute for Play, and author of Play: How It Shapes the Brain, Opens the Imagination, and Invigorates the Soul
“Peter Gray’s Free to Learn is profoundly necessary as a fundamental illumination of the continuing tragedy and entrapment of both kids and their teachers in a generally failing and failed educational system. Gray demonstrates through science and evolutionary biology that the human species is designed to play, is built through play, and that for kids, play equals learning. Free to Learn is timely, paradigm shifting, and essential for our long term survival as adaptive humans.”

Free to Learn Why Unleashing the Instinct to Play Will Make Our Children Happier More Self Reliant and Better Students for Life Hardcover
