Irvin D. Dr. Yalom is a good writer and offers a unique perspective here on his decades of work in psychotherapy. It's definitely thought-provoking reading, and very easy to follow.

But it left me with questions for the author (and some serious reservations)--never a good feeling at the end of a book.

On the one hand, I appreciate that his training was to remain distant from patients where, as he described it, even helping an elderly woman put on a coat would be frowned on. I appreciate that, through experience with real-life patients, he realized the importance of establishing warmth, an interpersonal connection, a -human- relationship with patients rather than a distant "psychiatrist-as-remote-God-like" figure.

However, reading many of the chapters here, I couldn't help but think some of the therapy methods he describes could be too intimate and too seductive with his patients. I kept feeling that it would be very easy to act like this and wind up crossing the line--or being misunderstood--in a therapy setting. Sexual attraction (and, as he says, even unconsummated love that is mutually felt) is a recurrent theme in so many stories he shares from his practice.

There seemed to me to be much too much emphasis on talking about the therapist-patient relationship each week. Dr. Yalom writes, over and over, that he realizes he is far more important to his patients, personally, than they are to him. And yet he also seemed to intentionally intensify their feelings for him in the course of therapy, giving example after example of how he pushed them to share dreams about him, fantasies about him, etc.

Why? Because your critical theory seminar was probably oversimplifying, and you're missing out on a radical piece of performance in book form. Thousand Plateaus is not 400 pages about rhizomes or nomads. That's just the vocabulary. And, I disagree with some of the other reviews here. It's not a torture to read; it's just not talking down to you. It's put together like a large circular sentence. You start somewhere in middle, or maybe at the beginning or end, not sure. You have to play catchup at first, but you will get the hang of it.
If it sounds like the structure of certain recent films (say, by David Lynch, Robert Altman, Paul Thomas Anderson) or works of fiction (like by Samuel Delaney, Haruki Murakami, or Thomas Pynchon) or minimal techno, or most museum biennials these days, then good, it should. Thousand Plateaus help to establish a framework for all of those things.
The book tries to establish a system of political, psychological and semiotic descriptions, always as a mode of resistance to all kinds of fascism, and D & G take the conflation of those levels as a given. Not just in the world of theory but also in how you think, and that's why it's written in such a particularly dense way. It tries very hard to be nonoppressive, and generous too, but for lots of people it can be a frustrating adjustment, accustomed as we are to writing that tries to be as flat and simple as possible. This book reads the way it thinks, and these two definitely prefer finesse to simplicity. Once you get into it, you may find that it's the best thing you've read for as long as you can remember. Or, at least that it makes you think in ways you don't while reading other books.
Being brainy continentals, these guys make reference to a store of intellectual history you won't be able to relate to.

The Psychopath Whisperer: The Science of Those Without Conscience by Kent A. Kiehl Ph.D. is an educational look on how functional MRI's provide insight into the psychopathic mind. The book is well written and an easy read. There is not a lot of scientific or psychological jargon that will be beyond the comprehension of most readers. The style is very relaxed and combines an academic and autobiographical approach.

Following are my thoughts on The Psychopath Wisperer:

Pros:

+ Interesting information on the use of Functional MRI (fMRI) and the difference in brains between psychopaths and non-psychopaths
+ Good information on the relationship between conduct disorder in youth and psychopathy in adults along with information on Callous Conduct Disordered Youth
+ Information on the importance of the amygdala and the paralimbic system in relation to antisocial personality disorder
+ Discussion on different assessments used to diagnose antisocial personality traits
+ Discussion of the Decompression Model used at Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center which is a treatment program focused on juveniles. As Kiehl states, "The results were nothing short of staggering."
+ Good overview of the history of psychopathy

Cons:

- Much of the information and examples is based on the DSM-IV which is now outdated since the introduction of the DSM-V. I would have like to seen the author incorporate information from the DSM-V.
- I do not feel that the title is representative of the topic. Using the title "The Psychopath Whisperer" implies that there is some control gained over psychopaths which is not the case. There is more "understanding" but not control.
- The book is written in part academic style and part autobiographical style.

I bought this on my Kindle I like the book but would not buy it in this format again, reasons to follow. First I would say the book has excellent content is well written and accessible for both novice and more experienced practitioner. I am a degree nurse with 3.5 years of forensic psych recently moved to an ED job where we act as a consulting service to the ER Docs and make recommendations for admission or D/C. Specifically I like the case study and framework used in the book I find it is helpful in interviewing and working out differentials both medical/organic and psychiatric.

However, the one issue I have with the book is the kindle format. The Kindle version has no index, and no text links, so you are unable to review the content of the book or to jump to another section of the book or print out any forms for that are only available in the paper copy. This is a significant shortcoming of this book's formatting for the electronic version for that reason I would again only buy this as a paper edition and forget it on the kindle unless they update the book to provide useful access.

The Psychopath Whisperer: The Science of Those Without Conscience by Kent A. Kiehl Ph.D. is an educational look on how functional MRI's provide insight into the psychopathic mind. The book is well written and an easy read. There is not a lot of scientific or psychological jargon that will be beyond the comprehension of most readers. The style is very relaxed and combines an academic and autobiographical approach.

Following are my thoughts on The Psychopath Wisperer:

Pros:

+ Interesting information on the use of Functional MRI (fMRI) and the difference in brains between psychopaths and non-psychopaths
+ Good information on the relationship between conduct disorder in youth and psychopathy in adults along with information on Callous Conduct Disordered Youth
+ Information on the importance of the amygdala and the paralimbic system in relation to antisocial personality disorder
+ Discussion on different assessments used to diagnose antisocial personality traits
+ Discussion of the Decompression Model used at Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center which is a treatment program focused on juveniles. As Kiehl states, "The results were nothing short of staggering."
+ Good overview of the history of psychopathy

Cons:

- Much of the information and examples is based on the DSM-IV which is now outdated since the introduction of the DSM-V. I would have like to seen the author incorporate information from the DSM-V.
- I do not feel that the title is representative of the topic. Using the title "The Psychopath Whisperer" implies that there is some control gained over psychopaths which is not the case. There is more "understanding" but not control.
- The book is written in part academic style and part autobiographical style.

By following the author's "7 Powers for Self-Control" (attention, love, acceptance, perception, intention, free will and unity), the parent will then be equipped to use the "7 Basic Discipline Skills" (including choices, encouragement and consequences). Bailey dismisses the familiar fear-inspired approach to discipline many grew up with (including threats and punishment), claiming that it inevitably leads children to make biologically driven choices and may even effect the brain due to the high levels of stress hormones released. Also rejecting the permissive parenting style now popular that favors "reasoning" (which, according to the author, imbues children with a victim mentality), Bailey instead promotes instilling an awareness of misbehavior through communication. Though some may be put off by the gimmicky overuse of slogans and buzz words, Bailey's underlying message is positive and hopeful, supported with humorous anecdotes and helpful solutions to even chronic discipline problems. Frustrated because your kid won't get in her car seat? Grumpy ever since your son decided that cleaning his room was optional? Ever feel bad after screaming at your kids for these and other things? Moans. Groans. Alas, parenting is no picnic. Bailey (There's Gotta Be a Better Way) acknowledges this and, in this insightful manual, suggests a disciplinary framework called "loving guidance." Loving guidance begins when parents learn seven "powers of self-control," which include acceptance and intention. Next, parents exercise seven basic discipline skills, such as empathy and maintaining composure. The goal is to teach kids the seven "values for living," including respect, compassion, and responsibility. Numerous, often funny lessons akin to those in Mark L. Brenner's When "No" Gets You Nowhere (Prima, 1997) help parents apply the concepts to daily life. Recommended for public libraries.

It sounds like a reference book, but the first 89 pages alone is worth the purchase. Who would have guessed that Confucianists, Taoists, Hindus, Buddhists, Christans, Jews, Greeks, Charlemange, Ben Franklin and The Boy Scouts of America could reach a consensus on the definition of "good character"? Well, no one of course. However, now that all the key characters are history (OK--but it many not be long for the Scouts if they aren't careful), these authors have rather brilliantly assessed the central writings of each source and created a credible structure of 6 key virtues that are made up of a total of 24 subcomponents they call "strengths" that have been recognized across a span of 2500 years and many cultures. They tie this into youth development research, the history of philosophy, evolutionary psychology and a fascinating analysis of the rise and fall and rise again of the concept of "character" in psychology. Then--did you ever want to learn more about the virtue of "Wisdom"--such as its history, the measurement techniques, the research--this is the place to read about it. How about "Justice"? Wow, this is fascinating reading because these psychologists carry everything from history through various disciplines down to measurement. If you dont' think this is new, consider the fact that psychologists have studied "insanity" for years. We can tell you if you are very insane, somewhat insane or have no symptoms. What is the positive half of that dimension? You want yourself and your children and those around you to be far far away from merely lacking symptoms--you want positive mental health. Fascinating topic. You want to read original sources? This book has 117 pages of references. That is about 2000 books and articles.

About the Author

KENT A. KIEHL, PhD, is an executive science offi­cer of the nonprofit Mind Research Network and a professor of psychology, neurosciences, and law at the University of New Mexico. In addition to authoring more than 130 articles in peer-reviewed publications, Kiehl has writ­ten for Scientific American, has appeared on NPR, and was profiled by John Seabrook in The New Yorker. He currently directs five major NIH-funded projects in psychopathy and related mental illnesses. He lectures extensively to state and federal judges, lawyers, cor­rectional officials, and lay audiences about the inter­section of neuroscience and the law.

The Psychopath Whisperer: The Science of Those Without Conscience by Kent A. Kiehl Ph.D. is an educational look on how functional MRI's provide insight into the psychopathic mind. The book is well written and an easy read. There is not a lot of scientific or psychological jargon that will be beyond the comprehension of most readers. The style is very relaxed and combines an academic and autobiographical approach.

Following are my thoughts on The Psychopath Wisperer:

Pros:

+ Interesting information on the use of Functional MRI (fMRI) and the difference in brains between psychopaths and non-psychopaths
+ Good information on the relationship between conduct disorder in youth and psychopathy in adults along with information on Callous Conduct Disordered Youth
+ Information on the importance of the amygdala and the paralimbic system in relation to antisocial personality disorder
+ Discussion on different assessments used to diagnose antisocial personality traits
+ Discussion of the Decompression Model used at Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center which is a treatment program focused on juveniles. As Kiehl states, "The results were nothing short of staggering."
+ Good overview of the history of psychopathy

Cons:

- Much of the information and examples is based on the DSM-IV which is now outdated since the introduction of the DSM-V. I would have like to seen the author incorporate information from the DSM-V.
- I do not feel that the title is representative of the topic. Using the title "The Psychopath Whisperer" implies that there is some control gained over psychopaths which is not the case. There is more "understanding" but not control.
- The book is written in part academic style and part autobiographical style.

I have read quite a few parenting books, and until recently I considered Faber & Mazlisch's books (including How To Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids will Talk) to be the absolute pinnacle. But if Faber & Mazlisch are like a college course in parenting, Becky Bailey's book is graduate school. I am deeply grateful to her for writing this book, and to the friend who told me, "You have to read this book! I want to load up an airplane with copies and drop them all over America!"
Unlike many parenting books which just offer tips and tricks for gaining children's compliance, Bailey's book is aimed at helping parents achieve self-control and self-discipline, so that they can then teach these skills to their children. When my friend first told me about the themes of the book, I thought, "Oh great. Just what I need--a book to make me feel bad about how out-of-control I am, how angry I feel towards my kids, how much I yell, etc." But it wasn't that way at all. Reading the chapter on "Assertiveness," for example, I realized that I do not need to feel guilty about my anger; I just needed to make a switch from saying to the children, "YOU are MAKING me furious" to saying "I feel furious when you yell in my ear. You can talk to me in a quiet voice, and I will listen." The first expression implies that children are responsible for their mother's feelings. The second lets me express my feelings, set boundaries, and give the children the information they need to make better choices.
Since reading the book, I feel better about myself and my children. It has strengthened my feelings of self-respect as well as helping me treat me children with respect. I look forward to applying my new skills in my adult relationships as well!
