Lovingkindness

Lovingkindness: The Revolutionary Art of Happiness (Shambhala Classics) Paperback

Author: Visit Amazon's Sharon Salzberg Page - ISBN: 157062903X - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Amazon.com Review

Sharon Salzberg, a meditation teacher and the founder of the Insight Meditation Society in Massachusetts, focuses on a kind of Buddhist practice that emphasizes feelings of love, happiness, and compassion. Metta, or "lovingkindness," meditation involves four phrases: "May I be free from danger"; "May I have mental happiness"; "May I have physical happiness"; "May I have ease of well-being." (Some readers will find this surprising, since the most commonly known meditation techniques have little "content"--you simply repeat a single word or phrase, observe your breath, or observe your thoughts as they pass through your mind.) Other exercises in this book are intended to increase your connection to and intimacy with others, by directing these positive sentiments outward toward specific people or the world in general. This book will probably be best appreciated by those who have some experience with meditation already, but anyone can appreciate the way it takes a practice often considered mystical and turns it into a means of creating joy. --Ben Kallen --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

From Library Journal

Another seminal work in the development of American Theravada, this expression of the central thrust of Vipassana and Insight Meditation explores ways to incorporate a caring mindfulness into day-to-day life.

I am not a Buddhist, but I've practiced insight (vipassana) meditation for several years. I was curious about lovingkindess (metta) meditation, which I'd heard of when I was in Burma, although as a beginner, I chose to stick to insight meditation.

Somehow I thought this book would be the best introduction to me, and I ordered it. But let me confess, at first I failed to appreciate it. I read about 20 pages, I was bored, and I put the book down for about 8 months. That's fine, insight meditation never hurt anyone.

I don't remember why I was initially so bored by the book. Perhaps it was because of her conversational style, full of stories from her own or her friends' experiences. Most people like that kind of thing, it makes the author's ideas easier to understand, more familiar and more human; but I usually prefer an author to state their point and move on, without personal stories. Anyway, the stories she shares actually illuminate her points quite well.

When I picked the book up again (8 months later), somehow it hit me this time. I read it in about 2 weeks, and it only took me that long because I actually did many of the meditation exercises she suggests. I intend to keep going back and doing more of them.

She does a good job presenting the tradition of metta meditation, as far as I can tell, although I'm certainly no expert on it.

Since she's Buddhist, naturally she believes in karma and reincarnation, but I don't. So I, as a thorough skeptic, appreciated the lack of supernaturalism throughout the book. In the penultimate chapter she gave an account of karma, but that was all. She was very considerate to skeptics in that regard.

The Handbook of Hypnotic Suggestions and Metaphors seems to be on the shelves of many aspiring and accomplished hypnotherapists. I have read almost all of it, utilized some of the methods, and have spoken with many hypnotherapists who have read and used it. The general consensus is that the book provides some good ideas, some very good ideas, some mediocre ideas and a few worthless ones. I have certainly expanded my methods from using it. For people who already know hypnosis, this book is useful as an adjunct. I provides many approaches and scripts, but I have found that all need to be adapted based on the client, the hypnotherapist and the context. This means you need to know how to adapt them, and this "how" is beyond the scope of the Handbook. However, the Handbook does not promise to teach people how to modify scripts and methods, so that is not a shortcoming of the book. If someone wants to know more about the art of hypnosis and how to adapt various materials, you need to read a book or take a class which is specifically about that.

The biggest strength of the Handbook is that it provides a large amount of material and covers many types of application. The biggest weakness is that several of the scripts include language that violates some of the rules of suggestion. For example, there are several suggestions that are given in the negative, such as "do not think of orange..." This kind of mistake is only a problem for people who have limited training in hypnosis. People with proper training read these mistakes, note them and correct the script. People with limited hypnosis training do not recognize many of the mistakes and will use scripts with mistakes.

Principles of Neural Science, Fifth Edition (Principles of Neural Science (Kandel)) [Kindle Edition]

Author: Eric Kandel James Schwartz Thomas Jessell Steven Siegelbaum A.J. Hudspeth Eric R. Kandel James H. Schwartz Thomas M. Jessell Steven A. Siegelbaum A. J. Hudspeth - ISBN: B009LHFYNG - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Now updated: the definitive neuroscience resource—from Eric R. Kandel, MD (winner of the Nobel Prize in 2000); James H. Schwartz, MD, PhD; Thomas M. Jessell, PhD; Steven A. Siegelbaum, PhD; and A. J. Hudspeth, PhD

900 full-color illustrations

Deciphering the link between the human brain and behavior has always been one of the most intriguing—and often challenging—aspects of scientific endeavor. The sequencing of the human genome, and advances in molecular biology, have illuminated the pathogenesis of many neurological diseases and have propelled our knowledge of how the brain controls behavior.

To grasp the wider implications of these developments and gain a fundamental understanding of this dynamic, fast-moving field, Principles of Neuroscience stands alone as the most authoritative and indispensible resource of its kind.

In this classic text, prominent researchers in the field expertly survey the entire spectrum of neural science, giving an up-to-date, unparalleled view of the discipline for anyone who studies brain and mind. Here, in one remarkable volume, is the current state of neural science knowledge—ranging from molecules and cells, to anatomic structures and systems, to the senses and cognitive functions—all supported by more than 900 precise, full-color illustrations. In addition to clarifying complex topics, the book also benefits from a cohesive organization, beginning with an insightful overview of the interrelationships between the brain, nervous system, genes, and behavior. Principles of Neural Science then proceeds with an in-depth examination of the molecular and cellular biology of nerve cells, synaptic transmission, and the neural basis of cognition. The remaining sections illuminate how cells, molecules, and systems give us sight, hearing, touch, movement, thought, learning, memories, and emotions.

The new fifth edition of Principles of Neural Science is thoroughly updated to reflect the tremendous amount of research, and the very latest clinical perspectives, that have significantly transformed the field within the last decade.

Ultimately, Principles of Neural Science affirms that all behavior is an expression of neural activity, and that the future of clinical neurology and psychiatry hinges on the progress of neural science. Far exceeding the scope and scholarship of similar texts, this unmatched guide offers a commanding, scientifically rigorous perspective on the molecular mechanisms of neural function and disease—one that you’ll continually rely on to advance your comprehension of brain, mind, and behavior.

I purchased the 4th edition of Principles of Neural Science back in 2001, when I was studying at McGill in cognitive science and neuroscience. This was the most useful introduction on the subject matter of neuroscience, and its amazing breadth and depth was sufficient to cover all the basics and find references for further readings on specific topics.

I used it extensively when I started my PhD in cognitive science at Carleton University and had a challenging, full-year course in behavioral neuroscience. The fourth edition has aged well as an introduction, but the neuroscience community was longing for an update in a field which is less forgiving about years-old sources. It is sad that it took 12 years (!) for an update, but what an update it is!

The 5th edition clocks at 350 additional pages approximately, and while the original material has been preserved where it is required, it *has been updated*. Sections on cognitive processes and behavioral features have been added, more details on aging and neuropathologies/lesions, and of course, the artwork is wonderful. It is slightly more pedagogically-oriented, which was not even a shortcoming in the previous edition. Awesome updates on the reference material to cover the work between 2000 and 2008-ish (I know, it's not up to 2012, but that's how editing and publishing works, viz., slowly).

The icing on the cake is the new computational neuroscience stuff, which is to me invaluable, considering that I study cognitive science in general, and computational cognitive modeling in particular. Add appendices on the theory of neural wiring/engineering and computational modelling, and this is a good A+.

I might be biased, since I wanted this book to be awesome, but hey, they did it again.

The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy

The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy: Healing the Social Brain (Second Edition) (Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology) [Kindle Edition]

Author: Louis Cozolino - ISBN: B003SNJL4W - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

How the brain's architecture is related to the problems, passions, and aspirations of human beings.

In contrast to this view, recent theoretical advances in brain imaging have revealed that the brain is an organ continually built and re-built by one's experience. We are now beginning to learn that many forms of psychotherapy, developed in the absence of any scientific understanding of the brain, are supported by neuroscientific findings. In fact, it could be argued that to be an effective psychotherapist these days it is essential to have some basic understanding of neuroscience. Louis Cozolino's The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy, Second Edition is the perfect place to start.

In a beautifully written and accessible synthesis, Cozolino illustrates how the brain's architecture is related to the problems, passions, and aspirations of human beings. As the book so elegantly argues, all forms of psychotherapy--from psychoanalysis to behavioral interventions--are successful to the extent to which they enhance change in relevant neural circuits.

Beginning with an overview of the intersecting fields of neuroscience and psychotherapy, this book delves into the brain's inner workings, from basic neuronal building blocks to complex systems of memory, language, and the organization of experience. It continues by explaining the development and organization of the healthy brain and the unhealthy brain. Common problems such as anxiety, trauma, and codependency are discussed from a scientific and clinical perspective. Throughout the book, the science behind the brain's working is applied to day-to-day experience and clinical practice.

Written for psychotherapists and others interested in the relationship between brain and behavior, this book encourages us to consider the brain when attempting to understand human development, mental illness, and psychological health. Fully and thoroughly updated with the many neuroscientific developments that have happened in the eight years since the publication of the first edition, this revision to the bestselling book belongs on the shelf of all practitioners.

The title says it pretty well: this book explains the physical aspects of the brain and how they are formed and changed by what the person experiences, starting from birth. While not set in stone, aspects of our personalities are actually set in the shapes and activity of our brains. It's a circular effect: what happens to us shapes our brains, and then the shape of our brains sets how we react to things. But thankfully, our brains can and do continue to change throughout our lives.

There are actual differences in the brain structures of people with OCD, ADHD, borderline personality disorder and many more psychological disorders. These physical differences can frequently be traced to how the person was treated by its parents as a baby- being nurtured results in a brain shaped one way; being ignored shapes it in another way. PTSD changes the brain. We know that some of these differences are from environment rather than genetics because of animal testing. What this tells us is that depression, PTSD, and other mental disorders are actual physical illness, not the result of having a weak character, and that people with these disorders should not be looked down on and should not be ashamed to seek help.

The shape of our brains comes from evolution; our brains have evolved through the primitive lower brain and added on the midbrain and the upper `thinking' part through the millennia. All our reactions must go through all these layers, and the amygdala, which is constantly on the alert for danger, reacts much faster than the upper, logical part of the brain- no matter how fast you can consciously think about something, your lizard brain has already reacted.

Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity, Second Edition: An Introduction to Worldview Issues, Philosophical Foundations, and Models of Integration

Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity, Second Edition: An Introduction to Worldview Issues, Philosophical Foundations, and Models of Integration [Kindle Edition]

Author: David N. Entwistle - ISBN: B0057ANA0K - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

As disciplines, psychology and theology share an overlapping interest in the nature and functioning of human beings. This book provides an introduction to many of the worldview issues and philosophical foundations that frame the relationship of psychology and theology, includes scholarly reflection on the integration literature, and surveys five paradigms of possible relationships between psychology and Christianity. The book is designed to help readers become aware of the presuppositional backdrops that each of us brings to these issues, and to understand various approaches for relating psychology and Christianity as partly based on presuppositional assumptions. Questions at the end of each chapter are included to help readers evaluate both the material and their own burgeoning approach to integration. This book is ideal as a textbook for students of psychology and other behavioral and social sciences (social work, sociology, theology, counseling, pastoral counseling) at both the graduate and undergraduate level. It is also written for the broader readership of psychologists, counselors, pastors, and others who are interested in integration.

"Integrative Approaches to Psychology and Christianity belongs on the bookshelves of students, clinicians, and researchers alike. In this book Entwistle provides readers with a conceptual roadmap for exploring, examining, and understanding Christian integrative approaches--while serving as a knowledgeable mentor along the way--offering in-depth analyses, theoretical insights, and practical applications."

--Jamie D. Aten, PhD
Dr. Arthur P. Rech and Mrs. Jean May Rech Associate Professor of Psychology,
Wheaton College and co-editor of Spirituality and the Therapeutic Process

"This book is a great resource for teaching the integration of psychology and Christianity. It is difficult to find a resource that articulates the main philosophical and theological ideas underlying good integration in one book. David Entwistle provides a thorough treatment of integration that is both understandable and readable. I strongly endorse this book for any educator tasked with teaching courses regarding the integration of psychology and Christianity."
--Dominick D. Hankle, PhD
Assistant Professor of Psychology
Regent University

"Entwistle's book should be required reading for all students studying the integration of psychology and theology! With questions aimed at addressing one's personal journey in the integration process, the book provides both a comprehensive review of the current integration research and application exercises for the growth of the individual student.
In the new edition, Entwistle takes another important step in formulating the integration of psychology and Christianity by addressing personal views of integration through the eyes of top psychological researchers in this field! This addition highlights diversity and personalization in the study of integration for key scholars hailing from variant Christian traditions."

--April L. Cunion, PsyD, LCP
Department Chair and Assistant Professor of Psychology
Regent School of Undergraduate Studies

David N. Entwistle is a licensed psychologist and spent the first decade of his professional life providing psychotherapy in residential and outpatient settings. Since 1996 he has been on the faculty of Malone College in Canton, Ohio, where he has served as chair of the Psychology Department and has taught courses in the undergraduate psychology, graduate counseling, and graduate Christian ministries programs. In addition to teaching and writing, Entwistle conducts research on how patients cope with chronic medical conditions.

I have read several books on the integration of psychology and theology and this was my least favorite.

Some of the issues I had with the book (the new 2010 edition of the text) include:

1. The author uses negative labels for anyone he disagrees with while using positive labels for those he agrees with (in an effort it seems to bias the reader). So Christians who try to base their counseling methodology on the Bible are labeled "Christian Combatants" while those that base their counseling on the Bible and use some psychology are called "Colonialists". A colonialist was someone that was a foreigner in another country and stole their resources, while Christian Combatants implies they are angry and mean. In the view he likes he calls it "Allies"

2. The author accuses several biblical scholars of misinterpreting Bible verses. His interpretation is weak and incorrect according to my (and almost all scholars). Entwistle on many, many occasions throughout the book denigrates those he disagrees with because he does not believe they are studying psychology enough. The author though has been trained and received degrees in only one field: psychology. He has a B.A. in psychology, M.A. (part of his Psy.D) in psychology, and a Psy.D (a non-research degree) in psychology. He has no degree or foundation in Biblical Studies or theology. The fact that he is bringing a Sunday School level of Biblical knowledge to his integration efforts is very blatant. Why does he denigrate Biblical Scholars for not studying psychology enough (according to him), yet he has not taken the time to become fluent in Biblical or Theological studies?

3. The author is extremely biased against Biblical Counselors.

Principles of Neural Science, Fifth Edition (Principles of Neural Science (Kandel)) [Hardcover]

Author: Amazon Prime Sign in to turn on 1-Click ordering - ISBN: 0071390111 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

The Neuroscience of Psychotherapy: Healing the Social Brain (Second Edition) (Norton Series on Interpersonal Neurobiology) Hardcover

Author: Louis Cozolino - ISBN: 0393706427 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Review

“If Kandel brought the viewpoint of a Nobel Prize neuroscientist, Cozolino delivers the informed perspective and integrative thinking of a master clinician in this updated edition….This beautifully written book is indispensable for anyone involved in the fields of mental health or public policy.” (Psychiatric Times)

“In his revised edition, Cozolino artfully traverses the gap between clinical practice and the emerging literature in neuroscience. By cleverly juxtaposing clinical examples with brain research, he demystifies psychiatric disorders and places them within an easy-to-understand neuroscience framework. Readers will come away knowing just how and why psychotherapeutic processes have a positive impact on the nervous system.” (Stephen W. Porges, PhD, Director, Brain-Body Center, Department of Psychiatry, University of Illinois at Chicago)

“A master clinician, outstanding teacher, and avid interpreter of a burgeoning literature, Dr. Cozolino is a welcome guide to this fascinating intersection of talk therapy, developmental psychology, anatomy, and neuroplasticity. In a reprise of his outstanding first edition, Dr. Cozolino brings readers up to date with this essential revision. Ten years of updates and a great deal of polishing will more than reward the returning reader or curious newcomer.” (John D. Wynn, MD, Medical Director, Division of PsychoOncology, Swedish Cancer Institute, and Clinical Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, University of Washington School of Medicine)

“Cozolino is a brilliant writer and wonderful story teller….Regardless of the level of neuroscience a psychotherapist wishes to add to their expertise I cannot recommend this book highly enough. The book also will be a valuable addition to the bookshelves of neuroscientists themselves, clinicians, policy makers and especially public mental health workers.” (Metapsychology Online Reviews)

“[E]xcellent….Psychotherapists and physicians alike could benefit from absorbing the challenges posed by the author, particularly his wish to see the psychotherapy of the future integrated with neurology.” (Dr. Bryan Knight - Hypnosis Depot)

The Wise Heart

The Wise Heart: A Guide to the Universal Teachings of Buddhist Psychology Audio CD – Abridged

Author: Visit Amazon's Jack Kornfield Page - ISBN: 1591796156 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

From Publishers Weekly

Starred Review. Author, psychologist and pioneering Buddhist teacher Kornfield writes his best book yet (and his previous ones were pretty good). His newest uses the same sweet narrative voice, provides convincing and illustrative anecdotes and stories, and reaches into world traditions and literature as well as contemporary scientific research. This book offers a systematic and well-organized view of Buddhist psychology, complete with occasional diagrams. Concepts and practices are placed in a framework that explains and connects them. It's all done with an eye toward application; most chapters end with exercises. Kornfield has been practicing Buddhism for close to 40 years, a lasting discipline that has produced this masterful book and a seasoned view of life that acknowledges a lot of oopses. As a mediator and psychologist, he has also witnessed some serious angst, including his own, and draws on it for illustrative power. Not everything here is new, least of all the title, but then the Buddha isn't either. The best is left for last: joy you can seek for yourself and others. Just keep your meditative seat, and this book by your bed. Kornfield comes across as the therapist you wish you'd had. (Apr. 29)

Review

“I love this gentle, brilliant, and incisive book. I read it slowly, with amazement at its richness and wisdom, relief at feeling so understood, pleasure in Kornfield’s beautiful writing and sweet humor, and gratitude that such understanding has been expressed in the written word. This Wise Heart changed me.” —Anne Lamott, author of Traveling Mercies and Grace (Eventually)

“What an extraordinary mind is Jack Kornfield’s. Curious by nature and brightly shining from birth, tempered by suffering, both personal and worldly, it guides us, in this profound and useful book, on a journey of consciousness unfamiliar to most of us born in the West. The Wise Heart is one of those books, more than a book, more like a companion, that encourages our bravery to meet whatever confronts us in life with a caring and tranquil heart. It is a transformative gift from one of the great spiritual teachers of our time.”—Alice Walker, author of The Color Purple

The Wise Heart is Jack Kornfield at his most wonderful and illuminating. He brings to life a way to understand and cultivate mindfulness, compassion, lovingkindness and true wisdom that penetrates to the core of what liberation is all about.”—Jon Kabat-Zinn, author of Coming to Our Senses and Arriving at Your Own Door

The Wise Heart offers more than remedies—it points the way to a life of flourishing.”—Daniel Goleman, author of Emotional Intelligence and Social Intelligence

"This masterpiece of a dedicated life’s work unveils the principles of an ancient ‘science of mind’ that are woven seamlessly into a wondrous map of the human heart—one that is astonishingly consistent with the discoveries of modern neuroscience.”—Daniel Siegel, M.D., author of The Developing Mind and The Mindful Brain

"Warm, funny, moving, and tremendously inspiring, The Wise Heart brings Buddhist psychology to life. Reading it is, in itself, a transformational experience.” —Mark Epstein, M.D., author of Thoughts without a Thinker and Psychotherapy without the Self

“Jack Kornfield harvests a lifetime of experiences to create a masterful, clear, and moving picture of the human mind and heart, a picture whose hopeful healing power I find astounding.”—Norman Fischer, former abbot, San Francisco Zen Center; author of Sailing Home: Using the Wisdom of Homer's Odyssey to Navigate Your Spiritual Journey

“Through clear teaching and wonderful storytelling, Jack Kornfield inspires us to realize and embody the love, presence and freedom that is our very essence.”—Tara Brach, author of Radical Acceptance

"One of today's most compeling and inspiring guides to spiritual growth."—Science of Mind

“His best book yet…. Kornfield comes across as the therapist you wish you’d had…. Provides convincing and illustrative anecdotes and stories, and reaches into world traditions and literature as well as contemporary scientific research.”—Publishers Weekly, starred review

I see that there are something like 32 reviews of this book, each one giving it 5 stars. It is a very nice book. A reasonable introduction to Buddhism for many people, an invitation to practice and learn. But let us have a slightly deeper look, OK? IMHO. For me, a relatively intense (in terms of time on retreats, reading material, study and daily practice) Buddhist practitioner of about 9 years, this books skims the surface. It skims a wide and useful surface and this can be quite a good thing in terms of a place to start. I acknowledge that it is very difficult to find good introductory texts, places to start. I will recommend this book to friends - BUT. There is also something a bit trite and monotonous about the structure of the book - for example: Introduce a concept, enlarge and expound a bit and then tell the story of Aleesha, James, Mitch, Kyle, on and on (no disrespect to these people or to those whose true experience contributed to these little blurb/stories). Jack gives them a practice or two "I encourage her to continually ground herself in her body" and then, magically, everything unfolds and soon they are crying or dancing or laughing or reconciling, recognizing their early childhood abuse, volunteering at literacy programs for immigrants, and so forth. It is too cookbook, too simplistic, slightly melodramatic and, unfair. Unfair because, while we can have many wonderful periods of clarity, healing, insight, etc. in our practice, it takes a lot of time for these things to unfold, a lot of right-effort and tremendous patience - many, many, many, many breaths! And typically this unfolding is very gradual, over years of practice.

Boys Adrift: Factors Driving the Epidemic of Unmotivated Boys and Underachieving Young Men [Unabridged] [Audible Audio Edition]

Author: - ISBN: B001D1ILE2 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Something scary is happening to boys today. From kindergarten to college, they are less resilient and less ambitious than they were a mere 20 years ago. Fully one-third of men ages 22 to 34 are still living at home with their parents, about a 100 percent increase in the past 20 years. Boys nationwide are increasingly dropping out of school; fewer are going to college.

Family physician and research psychologist Dr. Leonard Sax argues that a combination of social, cultural, and biological factors, ranging from environmental estrogens to the over-prescription of ADHD drugs, is creating an environment that is literally toxic to boys. Here, he presents his practical solutions, from new ways of controlling boys' use of video games to innovative education reforms.

I heard the first mention of this book on NPR and immediately ordered the book. It arrived just the other day and I sat down and read it through in one sitting, after listening to the author's very articulate discussion about the major factors which are contributing to the fact that boys -AND men - are faring worse than ever. The book is the result of many years of detailed study and research, not just some pop psych book hastily written and thrown out there.

I'll list some of the major points of the book but first I wanted to note some of the things I've observed, all of which the author covered as well. First, personal experience: As a parent of three, I've seen firsthand the changes in the school system in the last 25 years. Our oldest was allowed to walk about his classroom and his personality and inability to sit still for long periods of time was addressed, without meds (this does NOT mean that I think ADD or attention-deficit disorder does not exist but I DO think that in today's world he might well have been defined as ADD instead of having other options first). He loved school and he thrived and does not have ADD. In fact, as time went on, he settled down and became a rather steady, focused student.

As the author of this book has also noticed, there have been some alarming changes in the school system over the years. Kindergarten went from being a "hands-on" place, one that is good for boys, to a place where students were pushed to read, learn by doing worksheets and move away from field trips, exploring the world, meeting people in various professions or just touring a bread factory. This is a MAIN point made by the author, that
boys (and all children) need to "know" things by a combination of book learning and real experience.
