Sensorimotor Psychotherapy

Sensorimotor Psychotherapy: Interventions for Trauma and Attachment [Paperback]

Author: Pat Ogden - ISBN: 0393706133 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

A book for clinicians and clients to use together that explains key concepts of body psychotherapy.

The body’s innate intelligence is largely an untapped resource in psychotherapy. This book, designed for therapists and clients to explore together, is both psychoeducational and practical. It will help therapists and clients alike use their own somatic intelligence to reclaim the body and engage it in the therapy process.

A companion to the bestselling Trauma and the Body: A Sensorimotor Approach to Psychotherapy, the book is not intended to teach the practice of Sensorimotor Psychotherapy. Rather, it is meant to act as a guide for helping clients draw on the wisdom of their bodies. Following an initial introductory section, the book consists of relatively short chapters designed to educate therapists and clients about a particular topic. Worksheets are provided for each chapter designed to be used either in therapy or between sessions to help clients integrate the material.

Moral Tribes

Moral Tribes: Emotion, Reason, and the Gap Between Us and Them [Unabridged] [Audible Audio Edition]

Author: - ISBN: B00GBE63LE - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Our brains were designed for tribal life, for getting along with a select group of others (Us) and for fighting off everyone else (Them). But modern times have forced the world's tribes into a shared space, resulting in epic clashes of values along with unprecedented opportunities. As the world shrinks, the moral lines that divide us become more salient and more puzzling. We fight over everything from tax codes to gay marriage to global warming, and we wonder where, if at all, we can find our common ground.

A grand synthesis of neuroscience, psychology, and philosophy, Moral Tribes reveals the underlying causes of modern conflict and lights the way forward. Greene compares the human brain to a dual-mode camera, with point-and-shoot automatic settings ("portrait," "landscape") as well as a manual mode. Our point-and-shoot settings are our emotions-efficient, automated programs honed by evolution, culture, and personal experience. The brain's manual mode is its capacity for deliberate reasoning, which makes our thinking flexible. Point-and-shoot emotions make us social animals, turning Me into Us. But they also make us tribal animals, turning Us against Them. Our tribal emotions make us fight-sometimes with bombs, sometimes with words-often with life-and-death stakes.

An award-winning teacher and scientist, Greene directs Harvard University's Moral Cognition Lab, which uses cutting-edge neuroscience and cognitive techniques to understand how people really make moral decisions. Combining insights from the lab with lessons from decades of social science and centuries of philosophy, the great question of Moral Tribes is this: How can we get along with Them when what they want feels so wrong to Us?

Ultimately, Greene offers a set of maxims for navigating the modern moral terrain, a practical road map for solving problems and living better lives. Moral Tribes shows us when to trust our instincts, when to reason, and how the right...

Neuroscieintist/philosopher Joshua Greene has a big thesis in this book that requires some quite involved steps. His concern is to argue for a "metamorality" of the kind that should help groups with differing moralities resolve differences. Greene starts out envisioning two prototypical "tribes. One has a morality of self-reliance and "just desserts," where people are responsible for their lot in life and get rewarded in proportion to their efforts. The other has a more altruistic view of the world, where things are shared and shared alike, and everyone feels responsibility for everyone. The question: how do we decide which of these groups - or more likely, which elements of each group's worldview - should win the day in cases of moral conflict? (More specifically: when we face moral dilemmas where we could respond via self-interest and "just desserts" or with altruism and egalitarian "desserts", how should we determine which to go with?)

Greene's answer is basically a form of utilitarianism that he calls "deep pragmatism." And to see why requires some explanation, which could be really dull but isn't, owing to Greene's gifts as a good and clear writer. He argues that humans have what is called a "dual process morality" that is divided between intuitive gut instincts (dominated by the ventromedial prefrontal cortex) and a more calculating thought process (owing more to the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex). When it comes to questions of "me versus us," the intuition side of things is pretty reliable, making us feel guilty for taking more than "our fair share," breaking rules that we expect everyone else to follow, etc.

These assignments are a wonderful adjunct to the therapy process. They are very down-to-earth and practical -- no off-the-wall stuff here, just common sense, mainline psychology applied to everyday life circumstances. They are not too long so the client will be more apt to complete them. The exercises are focused on common presenting problems (Anger Management, Chemical Dependence, Depression, Sexual Dysfunction, Intimate Relationship Conflict, etc.) and they can be copied directly from the book or customized on your computer and printed from the CD that is included. If you are using The Complete Adult Psychotherapy Treatment Planner to formulate your client's treatment plan, these asignments are fully integrated with the presenting problems in the Treatment Planner book. I also like the fact that these assignments can be accessed in TheraScribe, the computerized treatment planning software, if you purchase the additional module that can be installed into the program. These Practice Planner materials save a lot of time and enhance the treatment process. You will not be disappointed.

The big fear with such books is 1) that it'll be quack anecdote stuff, or 2) that it'll be so obvious anyone with a high school psych book would know it already. This book is neither. Well-researched, cited, and both insightful and funny, it's simply a fun read. Also informative. Do recommend.

Moral Tribes: Emotion, Reason, and the Gap Between Us and Them [Kindle Edition]

Author: Joshua Greene - ISBN: B00C5R7GRQ - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION
The Boston Globe

“Surprising and remarkable… Toggling between big ideas, technical details, and his personal intellectual journey, Greene writes a thesis suitable to both airplane reading and PhD seminars.”

Our brains were designed for tribal life, for getting along with a select group of others (Us) and for fighting off everyone else (Them). But modern times have forced the world’s tribes into a shared space, resulting in epic clashes of values along with unprecedented opportunities.

Our point-and-shoot settings are our emotions—efficient, automated programs honed by evolution, culture, and personal experience. Ultimately, Greene offers a set of maxims for navigating the modern moral terrain, a practical road map for solving problems and living better lives. Moral Tribes shows us when to trust our instincts, when to reason, and how the right kind of reasoning can move us forward.

A major achievement from a rising star in a new scientific field, Moral Tribes will refashion your deepest beliefs about how moral thinking works and how it can work better.

This "What to Do" series was very useful to me as a parent. It explains complex psychological ideas at a child's level without condescending to them and then attempts to help them learn how deal with those strong emotions.

I purchased this book and What to Do When You Worry Too Much: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Anxiety (What to Do Guides for Kids) after my 5-year old was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. It has helped her and her then 8-year old brother work through the many adjustments in our family after the diagnosis. We went through the book together and then talked about the activities that might help them deal with how they felt. The simple, clear explanations were a great starting point for discussion. Not everything "worked" nor did we focus on "solving" these emotions--rather we used the books to help the kids see that they are not alone and that there are things they can do when they feel trapped by strong emotions.

My daughter is now almost 7 and still takes the Grumbling book out to read it over. She knows she does have things to complain about in her life, but also that she doesn't want them to take over her life. I have also just purchased What to Do When Your Temper Flares: A Kid's Guide to Overcoming Problems With Anger (What to Do Guides for Kids)which she is anxious to read! How many books on these tough topics can you say THAT about?

Moral Tribes: Emotion, Reason, and the Gap Between Us and Them [Hardcover]

Greene compares the human brain to a dual-mode camera, with point-and-shoot automatic settings (“portrait,” “landscape”) as well as a manual mode. Our point-and-shoot settings are our emotions—efficient, automated programs honed by evolution, culture, and personal experience. The brain’s manual mode is its capacity for deliberate reasoning, which makes our thinking flexible. Point-and-shoot emotions make us social animals, turning Me into Us. But they also make us tribal animals, turning Us against Them. Our tribal emotions make us fight—sometimes with bombs, sometimes with words—often with life-and-death stakes.

An award-winning teacher and scientist, Greene directs Harvard University’s Moral Cognition Lab, which uses cutting-edge neuroscience and cognitive techniques to understand how people really make moral decisions.

Moral Tribes shows us when to trust our instincts, when to reason, and how the right kind of reasoning can move us forward.

A major achievement from a rising star in a new scientific field, Moral Tribes will refashion your deepest beliefs about how moral thinking works and how it can work better.

Ready for a whirlwind tour through time and space, from the Crusades and the Holocaust to the war in Iraq, from recovered memories and the fallacies of clinical judgment to false confessions, wrongful convictions, and failed marriages? Then this is the book for you.

What ties these disparate topics together, according to tour guides Carol Tavris and Elliot Aronson, is the notion of "cognitive dissonance," which has been creeping into popular awareness in recent years. Cognitive dissonance is the uncomfortable feeling created when you experience a conflict between your behavior and your beliefs, most specifically about who you are as a person. ("I'm a good person, I couldn't do this bad thing.") To reduce dissonance, people engage in a variety of cognitive maneuvers, including self-serving justifications and confirmation bias (paying attention to information that confirms our beliefs while discounting contrary data).

Tavris and Aronson, both top social psychologists and excellent writers to boot, make their point through the repeated use of a pyramid image. Two people can be standing at the top an imaginary pyramid and can undergo the same dissonance-inducing experience. Person A processes the experience accurately, which leads him down one side of the pyramid. Person B engages in a series of defensive maneuvers to reduce cognitive dissonance that eventually lands him at the opposite side of the pyramid. Once at these opposite poles, the two can no longer recognize their initial similarities, and see each other as unfathomable and even dangerous. A particularly compelling, real-life example is two men who experienced a terrifying episode of sleep paralysis in which they saw demons attacking them.

Motivational Interviewing in Health Care: Helping Patients Change Behavior (Applications of Motivational Interviewing) Hardcover

Author: Visit Amazon's Stephen Rollnick Page - ISBN: 159385613X - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

Review

"We use this book for Coaching Wellness Behavior Change, a core class for all Exercise and Health Science students at UMass Boston. Lifestyle behavior has become a targeted issue contributing to population health. This book provides all health professionals (and future professionals) with invaluable information on developing provider-client relationships that facilitate change."--Dana Commesso, MA, Lecturer, College of Nursing and Health Sciences, University of Massachusetts, Boston

"At the heart of rehabilitation are two central tenets: First, the patient is a key member of the rehabilitation team. Second, the rehabilitation process requires patients to learn and utilize new adaptive behaviors. How do we make these two key notions come alive in our interactions with patients? This text is the answer to that question. It provides useful theory, evidence-based methods, and clinical examples. The material is accessible and does not assume advanced knowledge of psychology. The message and skills in this book should be part of the practice of every rehabilitation professional."--Stephen T. Wegener, PhD, ABPP, Director, Division of Rehabilitation Psychology, Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Johns Hopkins University

"This book provides a well-organized, thoughtful discussion about how to develop a set of interpersonal skills that can promote the betterment of patient care and health behaviors. Pharmacy practice faculty would be well advised to incorporate these powerful methods and examples into courses that address health behaviors and/or patient counseling."--Douglas J. Pisano, PhD, Professor and Dean, School of Pharmacy, Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences

"As pharmacists take an increasingly active role in health care and medication counseling, we now recognize that many 'medication problems' are, in essence, communication problems. Motivational interviewing allows pharmacists to communicate with their patients in a clear, concise, and structured way. Pharmacists and pharmacy students in any practice setting will benefit from implementing the tools and techniques in this book."--Ernest J Dole, PharmD, ABQ Health Partners, Albuquerque, New Mexico, and University of New Mexico College of Pharmacy

"In this era of evidence-based practices in health care, practitioners still face the vexing question: Will my patient actually follow the procedures known to be efficacious? This book assists health care professionals in maximizing their effectiveness. An evidence-based practice in its own right, MI facilitates cooperation and compliance with treatment regimens. If you are a health care professional or a mental health professional consulting in a medical setting, and have ever wondered what to do with a seemingly 'unmotivated' patient, this is the book for you."--Barent Walsh, PhD, Executive Director, The Bridge of Central Massachusetts

"This is an immensely useful text for teaching students and professionals how to help patients adopt health-promoting behaviors; for example, dieting, exercising, or attending follow-up appointments. Most such education concentrates on what to tell patients; this text concentrates on how to guide patients so that they will hear and implement the 'what.' As an MI trainer, I will be using this resource with a range of health care providers."--Robert G. Rhode, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, University of Arizona; member, Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT)

"This book delivers what it promises: practical, effective, and efficient strategies for producing more productive interactions with patients about behavior change. The authors, who are largely responsible for originating and refining MI, have translated this powerful evidence-based intervention into a set of core competencies and skills that can be easily understood, learned, practiced, and, most importantly, integrated into real-world clinical practice."--Michael G. Goldstein, MD, Associate Director for Clinical Education and Research, Institute for Healthcare Communication, and Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior, Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University

"Many of today's leading causes of death are significantly related to modifiable health behaviors. This book provides a critical approach for helping patients change their behavior. Motivational interviewing (MI) provides a new alternative to the outdated direct persuasion approach, bringing a breath of fresh air to the conversation between health care providers and those with chronic diseases like diabetes and obesity. Practical examples and exercises make this book a powerful tool for use in educating medical students, nurses, and other health care professionals about encouraging patients to make healthy choices."--Robert Gabbay, MD, PhD, Executive Director, Penn State Hershey Diabetes and Obesity Institute

"This practical guide moves motivational interviewing (MI) into the realm of everyday health care practice. Specifically, the book addresses the 'why' and the 'how-to' aspects of having conversations about behavior change. It helps clinicians learn to hear what their patients are really saying, and how to guide them through resolving ambivalence about behaviors. Relevant examples from various fields of medicine are provided. The chapter featuring extended examples of how to integrate MI into everyday interactions is particularly helpful. I see this as a useful resource for physicians, nurses, physician assistants, and other clinicians, as well as clinician educators involved in training students and residents."--Carol R. Schermer, MD, MPH, Department of Surgery, Division of Trauma, Loyola University Medical Center

"Packed with practical pearls of wisdom for guiding patients in the process of changing many types of unhealthy behaviors, this easy-to-read book is a gift to all health care providers. The authors use real-life cases and believable dialogue to illustrate how to use listening skills to elicit the patient's perspective and build toward change. Too many of us in health care get discouraged and give up hope too soon when patients are not compliant with our advice, when we really should be trying a different way to approach the issues. This book's 'can-do' and 'no-blame' orientation helps the busy clinician regain satisfaction in relationships with patients and become more effective in facilitating change."--Edward Bernstein, MD, Department of Emergency Medicine, Boston University School of Medicine; Director, Brief Negotiated Interview and Appropriate Referral to Treatment (BNI-ART) Institute, Boston University School of Public Health

"The authors highlight the underpinnings of effective communication and demonstrate how the spirit, philosophy, and principles of MI can actually enhance patient-provider relationships. This book is a 'must read' for health care practitioners across disciplines, from novice clinicians searching for practical advice to expert providers seeking professional refueling. Faculty will find this book invaluable for teaching future health care providers, as the information on MI is evidence based and the case examples are drawn from real-world clinical experiences. In today's fast-paced health care industry, providers may feel daunted by encroaching technology or hamstrung by requisite documentation. Therefore, enjoying meaningful interactions with patients becomes even more of a challenge. Fortunately, MI can help providers connect with their patients. Motivational Interviewing in Health Care By Rollnick, Miller and Butler

As an experienced neurologist (read 'old')I have spent decades and read many books about interviewing: neurological, psychiatric, difficult, challenging, etc., etc. In serial publications over 20 years or more, Dr. Miller and others have refined the process of how to converse to effectively motivate patients to do what (you think) they should do.

Doctors know that figuring out what a patient needs is only the beginning of the overall process. Selling the patient is important in medicine if optimum results are to be attained. This book is a communication guide. This book shows you how to convince the patient he needs and really wants to buy your product for his own good.

In an intelligent and logically organized fashion, this thin book (2-3 hours max to get through, but then more time later to restudy and refine technique) provides a matrix from which to work to induce your patient to internalize wanting and needing to do what he should do for optimal health. It shows physicians or counselors how to begin therapy after making a diagnosis and reinforces a teamlike approach where resistance or escapism can often show up.

If you recall the book The House of God, one of the first rules proferred was that the patient is always the one with the problem. This book guides the doctor to show the patient why he needs to take on his problem and be motivated to handle his part optimally for his own good.

As I improve my use of these straightforward techniques, I am considering jettisoning the ballpeen hammer I used to use for the same purpose. There is nothing earth shattering here.
