"From Buddhist psychology, to the latest brain research, to the uses of mindfulness across a spectrum of conditions, the editors and contributors cover it all. This book offers a comprehensive, accessible, and authoritative guide to integrating mindfulness into psychotherapy. I particularly appreciate the new material on compassion and practical ethics in the second edition."--John D. Teasdale, PhD, Cambridge, United Kingdom

"The book weaves a comprehensive narrative regarding mindfulness, its relevance for therapeutic relationships, and its application in clinical settings. It is truly valuable for clinicians who wish to introduce mindfulness concepts to help patients reduce their suffering. The book is rich with practical techniques that can be readily applied with patients, and provides specific recommendations for introducing mindfulness to different populations. An exceptional tool for clinicians."--Stuart J. Eisendrath, MD, Department of Psychiatry, University of California, San Francisco

"At this time of dynamic exploration of the relationship between Western psychology and Buddhist mindfulness meditation practices, this second edition of Mindfulness and Psychotherapy is most welcome. A wide range of readers--therapists, psychology students, researchers, and others seeking to better understand mindfulness--will find themselves referring to this volume again and again."--Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Happiness and Lovingkindness

As I was reading the second edition of Mindfulness and Psychotherapy, I was reminded of the prescience of British historian, Arnold Toynbee who said, “The coming of Buddhism to the West may well prove to be the most important event of the twentieth century.” Indeed, there has been an explosion of interest and research into the subject of mindfulness in medicine, mental health and neuroscience over the past thirty years. Jon Kabat-Zinn recently said in the context of the integration of meditation and psychotherapy: “Make no mistake. Mindfulness is not a trend. It is not the next new thing.”
This volume speaks to the power and momentum of interest in this subject, building on the remarkable first edition and expanding significantly on its content, depth and overall applicability to clinical work and the challenging task of being human. Each chapter stands alone quite well as a comprehensive article. In fact, there are several totally new additions on the subjects of depression, anxiety, practical ethics, trauma and addiction. A number of other chapters have been significantly modified, reflecting the current thinking and evolving wisdom of the authors as well as the voluminous research of the past decade.
The editors have successfully organized a vast array of material into a coherent, integrated state-of-the-art guide to the collective wisdom of Western psychotherapy, dharma study and practice. I love the way the book repeatedly brings fresh perspective to our current efforts as therapists to simply sit with patients and understand the subtleties of what they are saying (and not saying) as well as how to use mindfulness practices to illuminate that understanding.
