Addiction Treatment

Addiction Treatment (Substance Abuse Counseling) [Print Replica] [Kindle Edition]

Author: - ISBN: B00B7K7E10 - Language: English - Format: PDF, EPUB

DESCRIPTION

ADDICTION TREATMENT covers the biological, psychological, and social aspects of alcoholism, eating disorders, compulsive gambling, and other addictions. As symbolized by the image on the book's cover, the authors bridge the gap between the popular twelve-step and harm-reduction approaches, thus illuminating how practitioners can guide clients down a trusted path that is tailored towards the client's particular needs. Through a number of first-person narratives about the experience of addiction, students will discover a realism and depth not commonly found in textbooks. In addition, the authors include student-friendly topics, such as the case against so-called underage drinking laws, to draw students into the material and illustrate the importance of reducing harm within the biopsychological framework that ties the text together.

van Wormer & Davis's book on Addiction Treatment is as excellent a book on this subject as I have ever read. They carefully look at the long history of addiction treatment, noting the strengths and contributions of each approach and then integrate them all into several chosen models. In a field where change is difficult, for those with addictions & for those employed to help them, the models used are critical to success. van Wormer and Davis not only thoroughly understand addiction, they understand the basic paradigms (values) behind each method, its history, and what are each models best points, called strengths, can lead to in the way of change.

In counseling of any kind, too many people spend too much time detailing, listing, analyzing and feeling about the bad situation that exists for so many addicted persons. Such listing and analysis as a first step is helpful but not required. When that all is done, what do you have but a list of what is wrong? You have taken no or a few steps towards change. Many models and counselors stop there because they have not really mastered the change process. People change best from work with their strengths, taking into account deficiencies and lack of resources. A strength's perspective, offered by van Wormer and Davis, offers hope to begin with and then seeks change and steps forward. They empathize looking intently on what is desired, a critical step, not at hanging on to what is wrong. The latter really is of little use to actual change.
