I am not familiar with the initial edition of this text, but I am very happy with the newest (2nd) edition.
The topics are relevant for mental health practitioners and advanced students. Each chapter identifies the authors and their professional titles are provided in an earlier section of the text as is customary.
I haven't read the book thoroughly so I will not comment on the relevance of each chapter, but in looking at particular topics of interest to me, I was pleased with the latest findings presented and discussed. Biological perspectives is an area for which I am doing much to better educate myself and I appreciated how this was presented in the chapter on child maltreatment. I was disappointed, though, that I didn't notice in this chapter or in the index mention made of the ACE's study on adverse childhood experiences affecting later health and well being. I would think that this study is of significant value for practitioners and educators. I encourage readers to find these studies freely available on the internet.
My first impression of the book was what others have mentioned on this page that is, how this book might have better waited for the DSM V publication. The book offers several dozen pages on the likely new DSM diagnoses for childhood disorders. But this is a minor matter since none of the chapters I saw relied on the DSM to explain the disorders. Nevertheless, this is something that the text could have mentioned without devoting so much space, but it is a small complaint.
I also like that there is a chapter on the issue of childhood schizophrenia. Although, a clinician can spend a career never seeing this in a patient, it is a subject that has garnered much recent attention with the case of young Jani Schofield as told in a L.A.
